Radar detector

So I was wondering what your guys' opinion on Radar dectctors. I've never used one myself but it seems like a good idea to have one if I feel like racin around town a little bit ( and when i say racin i just mean speeding in general =D) so idk what do you guys think? do they work? are they worth shellin out the money for? whats up?

Re: Radar detector

I use laser detector for highway driving and it works great. Sometimes it goes off though when I'm near shopping centers and malls.

Re: Radar detector

Don't speed in unfamiliar spots. Always know where the police setup shop if you're going to exceed the speed limit.

Re: Radar detector

I have always been a fan of Beltronics. I can't say how good the other companies are but I would assume they are just as good if not better. Just make sure you get one that has the features you need. Most people go with a unit that is around 9 or 12 band including X, K, Ka, and even different types of laser. Also, a good feature is VG-2. That prevents cops from seeing your radar detector...kind of like a jammer. That is just a few features that they come with. Some will have voice prompt, and nicer displays. I would say anything over $100 from a respectable store will get you a "nice" unit. I have seen them priced as high as $500 though too. Here is a quick line up from CNET.

Re: Radar detector

^ he pretty much covered it! Beltronics makes great radar detectors. Cheapos from walmart and such will detect radar...from anything! Bels have good false rejection but they all still false. Their pro series RX 55, 65 and GX65 are the ones to have. 200 bucks now CAN save you a lotta dough in the long run. We have a lot of roads around here that are very long with a low speed limit that hav e minimal traffic and a lot of visibilty. I feel my attention to the road permits me to drive faster than the law permits. Mine has saved me numerous times. Still just a tool. There is no failsafe out there.

Re: Radar detector

I have the Escort 8500 and it works great. I havent used it lately though. I found myself relying on it too much and pretty much just speeding everywhere. I got so used to the beep that one day it was going off and I didnt even notice it and I got a ticket lol. Theres a new escort 9500 out now that hooks up to your GPS and learns all the false alarms. Pretty cool imo.

Escort and bel are actually the same company just different look. The 9500 has gps built in. It works really well too! 5 bills tho.

Did you trade in an 8500? Any idea how much they give you for it? I wanted to look into it but I never did.

Re: Radar detector

i have a beltronics and the thing works great. But just remember you're only going to get a signal if another car in front of you is hit, it's pointless to be speeding alone on the highway, if it goes off, that means he tagged your car and your now screwed...

If theres a cop sitting ahead running radar a good detector will pick up the signal before your car is in range of it. Thats the difference between cheap detectors and good ones. My 8500, on a clear night and a straight highway (i.e. rt 35 all down the Jersey Shore) has picked up cops over a mile up the road. Saved my ass with cops around bends and stuff too. With laser youre pretty much screwed unless your car is primered out or something. The laser has to hit a reflective surface on your car for them to get a reading. If you slam your brakes as soon as your hit with laser before they can get a second shot (if they need to) sometimes you can beat it but usually not.

Re: Radar detector

some ppl think that radar detectors are cop detectors. I've had ppl say to me "there goes a cop, why didn't it go off?"

With that said, even if you're racing around town, and not being radared, cops can still hear tires squealing and engines revving up, or exhaust.

I have a passport 8500(red LED)that I can't get to turn on anymore. If someone wants to buy it for cheap let me know. I've sure someone can fix it. It just stopped working one day.

And yes...radar detectors are useful. You never know when its gonna save you that $200 for a ticket.

Is it the Valentines that pay your ticket if you get one? I know one of the radar detector companies does that.

Re: Radar detector

Their trade in program is something like 50 bucks. Not really worth it but 50 bucks is 50 bucks I guess. I wouldn't ever spend the money on a valentine. Old technology, doesn't have user friendly features. And works no better than any other high end detector. We've shown people the RX65 and swapped out a lot of valentines for them.

Re: Radar detector

Exactly! Radar doesn't mean cop! K40 pays your first ticket I believe. K40 RD850 works GREAT! Incredible range and false rejection. The cheese ball leds across the front and annoying, barely attenuated alert is really annoying. It gets a D for creature comforts were a bel gets A+

The man doesn't lie ^^^^^

I'm a supporter of Escort myself. The valentine one is just an incredible little detector tho man. A friend said he knew someone that used it and it worked unbelievably.

Valentine used to have some kidn of thing where if you got a ticket they reimbursed you or some shiit like that. I'm not sure if they still got it tho.

**EDIT**
Wow they dropped the price the last 3-4 years. I think it used to be somethin like 5-600 dollars.

whistlers suck. I personally hated mine. My cobra did a way better job, and my escort being the best of the 3.

Re: Radar detector

I'm a fan of detectors myself they have got me out of some tickets but you have to remember that they don't work in some situations. Some cops only shoot radar as cars go by so if you are the only one on that road there will be nothing to detect until the radar has already got you, so only speed in areas you know.

Re: Radar detector

How about if you don't want to get caught speeding, then don't speed. While I'll admit that we all speed a bit occasionally, nobody can get past the fact that in practically every situation, speeding is dangerous, is always stupid, and always illegal.

Seriously you guys, it's not fun when you need to go to a funeral of a mate who was killed in a car crash, and it's even worse when it was caused by somebody else who was speeding. And it's worse again when the speeder themselves lives to tell the story.

Some people need their testicals put between a moving sledge hammer and an anvil.
