ABS light on - wheel speed sensor? '94 Si

About a month ago, I hit a particularly bad pothole and noticed that the ABS light came on immediately after. In the past, this has been solved by topping off the master cylinder with brake fluid, but not this time. Additionally, when I first start the car, the light is not on- it only comes on after I start rolling. This to me seems like a wheel speed sensor issue. Does that seem right?

If it's a wheel speed sensor, can these be cleaned or must they be replaced? How would I determine which one is faulty?

Thanks for any help guys!

Re: ABS light on - wheel speed sensor? '94 Si

Pull the code and see what it says.

There is a 2-pin connector behind the center console (radio) on the driver's side...its the 2 wire connector closest to the driver's side. Install jumper wire between pins on 2-pin connector. Turn ignition
on (without engine running). Record blinking ABS warning light sequence.

The first number of flashes is for the first number, then there will be a pause then a second number of flashes for the second number. (ex. 4 flashes - pause - 1 flash. Means a bad right front wheel sensor)

Here is the list for the codes:

Codes:
1 - ABS pump motor over-run
1 2 ABS pump motor
1 3 high pressure leakage
1 4 pressure switch
1 8 high pressure system
2 1 parking brake
3 1 pulser RF
3 2 pulser LF
3 4 pulser RR
3 8 pulser LR
3 12 different diameter tires
4 1 wheel sensor RF
4 2 wheel sensor LF
4 4 wheel sensor RR
4 8 wheel sensor LR
5 - rear wheel lock - R/L
5 4 rear wheel lock - R
5 8 rear wheel lock - L
6 - fail-safe relay - F/R
6 1 fail-safe relay - F
6 4 fail-safe relay - R
7 1 solenoid - RF
7 2 solenoid - LF
7 4 solenoid - R
8 1 ABS function
8 2 CPU comparison
8 4 IC self-check

If you have any troubles or questions let me know.

I personally dont have alot of experience with ASB systems but one thing i can say is call your local dealership service department and tell them the code and they should be able to tell you how to fix the problem. The parking brake could just need to be adjusted but call the dealership and see what they say. Sorry i couldnt be of any more help.

It should be there somewhere. Its a small blue 2 port connector. Sometimes its hidden but its there.

ok so i found the wires but there is no connector at the end. and is not hooked up to anything, its just the wires, and if there was something to plug it in i dont see where it can go or plug into.

That could be the wires for the connector. You "could" just touch the two wires together and see if the ABS light blinks and count the sequence explained above but there is a possibiliy that it could short something out.

Re: ABS light on - wheel speed sensor? '94 Si

ur right they are the wires for the connectors, i took a peice of speaker wire hooked it up to both the abs wires and i turned the power on and tada, the abs light blinks one time slow and then two times fast, this happens three times. so would it be 1 then 2?

Re: ABS light on - wheel speed sensor? '94 Si

It's a 4th gen... the abs light is SUPPOSED to be on ... mine is the same... doesn't come on until I start rolling... my parking brake is loose, but I think I must have another problem... abs didn't seem to engage when I locked the wheels up today on the way to town... maybe people without brake lights should consider using their turn signal... JACKASSES. Glad I didn't wreck my lude... tires squealing, leaving black marks... it's all okay as long as the car makes it... there was traffic in the oncoming lane and the lude def. got a little loose.

more about my problem so we can compare...

The ABS light started coming on a long time ago back when I was h23... at first it would only come on every once in a while (AFTER I started moving... sometimes after 2 seconds, sometimes after 15 minutes...)and I thought maybe the idiots beating on the rotors when replacing them may have cost me a sensor... never confirmed this...

Eventually it started coming on as soon as I cranked the car BEFORE I started moving... I decided to change my brakes out myself (rotors included) next time I needed them and got my wife's uncle to help me out... The problem was the same after this... it still stayed on ALL the time...

So... Then I got the h22 swap (no brake work, mind you)... and suddenly it was back to it's old habit of coming on AFTER I started moving. It usually comes on pretty quick (within a 50 yards or so?), but sometimes it may take just a little longer (not more than 1/4 mile)... the interesting thing now is that I can hear a slight "hum" until the light "clicks" on, and then the sound is gone! (I need to pull the code, but I'm lazy...)...

How's this compare with you other 4th geners ABS issues?

Re: ABS light on - wheel speed sensor? '94 Si

my abs light stays on all the time. as soon as i start the motor it comes on and stays on never turns off. i did jump it tho and it gave me a code of 1 long blink and 2 fast blinks, it did this three times. so im guessing the code is 1 and 2 or 3 and 6

Re: ABS light on - wheel speed sensor? '94 Si

^yeah, mine used to stay on all the time...

 if you have more than one issue, is it able to produce more than one code... does it do this in sequence??
