Worrying DYNO resultscompression

my car seemed a little slower than usual so last week i had it put on a dyno and to my surprise it was only producing 160hp at the flywheel. i couldnt believe my eyes and thought the mechanic was messing about so i had him run it 3 times over but no change. i even tried advancing the timing but it only made a couple of hp difference.

I cant figure out whats wrong as i have not done any other mods since my last dyno run a year ago..

im guessing its something to do with the engine i.e valves / timing / compression etc.

does anyone have any ideas about this sort of thing or is there anything i can do to get it back to normal.

the car has been regularly serviced.

is my engine on its way out??

Re: Worrying DYNO resultscompression

how many miles have you put on it since the last dyno?? sorry should have been in the first set. But what im getting at, is, over time your engine will loose efficiency or may need to be tuned up, and this can cause a loss in horsepower. But in your case it is a huge loss in a relativly short amount of time.......... hmmmmm

Re: Worrying DYNO resultscompression

i have done about 30,000 miles since the last dyno. i thought it was the a/f ration but its perfectly fine..had it hooked up to the dyno and all readouts are perfect apart from the power output.

i contacted the dealers who told me to get the valve clearance checked but they stated that idle revs will flutter slightly if valve clearance is not right and my revs are perfectly static at 1000rpm

Re: Worrying DYNO resultscompression

160 at the flywheel or wheels??? cuz thats h23 numbers if its flywheel... but 160 at the wheels is closer to correct. and 210 at the flywheel (depending on mods) sounds closer to right....

buttt if you didnt convert to OBD 1 then the computer will slowly revert its setting back to factory specs over time... even with mods.

Re: Worrying DYNO resultscompression

It would have to be something simple - oxygen sensor, vacuum line or something like that. Try resetting your ecu?

check your vtec fluid lol

how does it figure flywheel power on the dyno???? that measures at the wheels b.c every car will lose a different percent of power from the flywheel to the wheels

if i cant figure it out ill just have to upgrade the entire valve train and camshafts coz i think its something to do with the internals

Agreed with above

A leakdown test is done with a leakdown tester. Basically, you put compressed air in the cylinder at the point where ignition occurs (TDC for each cylinder) and test the amount leaking past. There is common specs for allowable leakage and when it becomes excessive its usually easy to tell where your problem is from. Air will leak out of the places where you have issues and you can usually trace it down without tearing the car apart first. You can hear air leaking from the valves through either the throttle plate or out the exhaust to determine which valves are messed up if this is the case. You can pull out the dipstick and hear a whistling if you have leakage from your rings. The headgasket can be the hardest to tell, but often it will cause coolant to bubble or actually bubble out the sides of the gasket.

Make sense?

it test to see how long the cylinder holds the compression... it might build it fine but let it leak out to fast...

Re: Worrying DYNO resultscompression

i think the dealer mentioned that they do three different types of tests so im presuming a leakdown test will be part of the entire test..i will make a point of asking them though just to make sure..

just one question...if compression is low in any of the cylinders what options do i haven to rectify it

Re: Worrying DYNO resultscompression

if it is low in one of them it can be a number of thins.

leaky valve seals, rings, valve not closing all the way...

Re: Worrying DYNO resultscompression

just fyi, i went 14.0 @ 97mph with 173whp and 137ft lbs.

if you were on a dyno with your car, it is wheel hp. The only dynos that really test flywheel hp are engine dynos.

if you made power to roughly 7000 rpm, the engine holds compression and you make peak torque around 5000 rpm then your engine is fine.
