RPM Dropped Below 500

Sup guys i have a 99 prelude 5 speed and for some reason my RPM drop when i rev it and let the rpm drop freely in neutral, the rpm drop below 500 and it seems like the car wants to die.I think it might probably be a vacum leak or a bad sensor, but any information would be helpful thnx.

Could be many things...but i dont think a timing belt kit will help at the moment

vacuum leak sounds right inspect them and also you may want to check out this link to cleaning your IAC.

Spark plug wires are snug?

Re: RPM Dropped Below 500

Alright today I got the code checked at midas for free whaaaaaat I kno right tipped the guy 10 buxs better then paying 99so anyways. I got the codes I think it was p0301 p0302 p0303 p0304 all of them cylinder misfire. So I check for vacum leaks turns out my intake aem was missing well not missing but one of the cuplers didnt have the c clamps all the way attached so the vacuum leak was comming from there I retighten everything. The rpms didnt drop anymore good thing but the code was still being trown. Then my friend asked me what fuel I was using I told him 87 unleaded. He pointed me out I need premium fuel it said right there in the instrument panel duh. Can that be causing the misfire in all the the cylinders I mean it revs nice no hard idling nothing. Oh yeah checked the wires they are good. By changing to premium will my code go away the ses light.

Re: RPM Dropped Below 500

My 4th gen does this sometimes... 9/10 times its fine, kinda high idle at 1000rpm, but fine.

Every once in a while it'll drop down to like 400rpm and the whole car will shudder till it warms up or I rev it for a bit and it fixes itself....
It has a new fuel pump, so it might be the fuel pressure regulator thingy (yes, thingy), atleast thats what my mechanic friend said.

Re: RPM Dropped Below 500

That is the cardinal sin my friend...Running 87? Really? SHAME SHAME.

Try resetting the ECU since you've "fixed" it. Just unplug the ECU for ten seconds, then plug it back in to "reset" it. If the codes are still there, you've got other problems.

Go back to Midas, find the guy you tipped 10 bucks and ask him to reset/clear the codes using the OBD II scan tool.
Make sure you use PREMIUM UNLEADED ONLY!!!! :ciao:

For the love of God listen to this man. My cousin put 87 in his brand new RX-8 for 20k miles, now it tops out at 97mph and randomly dies on him. 87octane + sports car = certain doom.

I doubt this is because hes using 87 octane... though 87 octane IS a no-no for our preludes

100% it is your fuel pump i had the same thing going on last weekend, buy front fuel filter and the sock filter for the rear along with the pump, it will run you about 220 and two hours of work, i would write up a diy but i have exams tomorrow. IT IS YOUR FUEL PUMP, pull the lines off the front fuel filter and let them disapate because there is a tone of residual pressure. once they stop spraying try and crank the car, if you have fuel coming out you should be good to go, if no its time for a new fuel pump. DO YOU HAVE A SHOP MANUAL, it is really helpful. all you need to do is remove your rear seats, all of the excepter for the folding door, take the cap off that goes into the fuel tank, remove the lines, be careful not to bend them, pull the pump out, replace it, struggle for 45 minutes to get the fuel pump back in and WALLA the car will work.

also do a conductivity test on the relay, which is under the steering wheel, you will have to look this up but there should be 12 volts going to it, and it is the fuel pump relay, but i doubt this is the problem. but do check it

thats b.c he needs a new motor.... i will put money on it... my gf rx8 did that and we ONLY out premium in it since day one. one day i had the car floored and it would only go like 65. thank goodness for factory warranties cuz its got a fresh motor after 40k miles. alot of those motors came out of the factory bad... its a pretty big issue with the rx8's

I know they suck. I know there's a warranty to get them replaced for free if they're under like 65k miles or something.

To the OP, I would say fuel pump also.
