How to make a Lude sound good?

I work at a Meinek in Pittsburgh. Now I do exhausts all day and every week theres a young punk comes in with a 40.00 fart can and wants it on his civic. I make fun of him and put it on. Moneys money right? lol Now my question is, When I get my lude What is the size of the pipe that the stock manifolds are? I think they a 2" but not sure. If I do decide To keep the stock "headers" I will go with the biggest possable size from there back. This hopfully will give me a nice rumble depending on what kind of muff I get. As far as "cat back" systems you can buy. I think that it would be wastfull for me to spend that kind of money on something I can make my self. I did put a cat back system on a 1999 civic si on time and I actually liked the sound but the kid droped 700.00 for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So......... Any anyone got any insight on tubing size and the resulting sound?

Re: How to make a Lude sound good?

bigger is not always better.

all the very good sounding catbacks only have 2.33" piping; ws2, rsr, evo2, sp2....

Re: How to make a Lude sound good?

If you would like to save money and stay away from those coffee cans, but a N1 stanless steel full cat back, it will have a fart can on it $70.00 ebay, done custome piping(the piping i got was 2.25, it has a very smooth euro tone to it, not that raspy rice rocket sound). Next, go on magnaflows website, order the correct size inlet for your exhaust. I bought the dual square tip oval muffler off of them for about $179.00, then cut off the Fart can, and weld on the new magnaflow. and it should all just line right up, you will need to weld two hangers onto the muffler also, but since you work on exhausts, the hardware should be your only expenses.

here is what my exhaust sounds like, the videos are kinda redickulous though.

and unless you have a turbo, dont go 2.5, try what nick said 2.33 or what i did 2.25

Re: How to make a Lude sound good?

stock piping and downpipe is 1 7/8" but to keep from getting a raspy result, do not go over 2 1/4"- 2.33" i have a ws2 and after 4 different setups i finally found the one i like.

Re: How to make a Lude sound good?

check out this thread..
Non-Ricer Exhaust

I had 2.25" on my h23a1 with flowmaster 40 series and stock cat... was a little loud with no res, but had a great tone... I liked it a lot.

I put 2.5" on the jdm h22a, and am dynotuned... it will run down to 1500rpms without bogging (I am ectuned on the dyno), enough torque there... I have a magnaflow high flow (metal substrate) cat, res., and a titanium Nopi muffler (N1 style)... I ran the bitch without the res. for about a weak and it was so loud my ears hurt if I didn't wear plugs, lol. My wife and I drove past brick and block buildings 20+ yards away and the resonance was amazing... IE it was way too ****ing loud...
With the res. it is mellow enough for daily driving, but you still have a sexy drone that becomes a roar as you WOT the beast into vtec...
maybe not quite as deep a tone as the old flowmaster, but sounds good for a 4cyl.

my shop (did my exhaust) puts 3" exhaust on most NA 1.6 and 1.8 liters and they have a civic with 900 hp that has run below 9 in the 1/4 mile, so I trust them a lot, but I wanted to stay a bit smaller, plus I already had the 2.5" cat... www.hottexhaust.com .

Keep in mind this is all crush bent, so the entire pipe is not quite that big.... factory 2.33" catback is mandrel bent... but too ****ing expensive for someone who can build their own exhaust!

ohh, before I got the res, my wife could hear my car coming home from work for about the last 2 miles of the trip, and the dogs perked up well before that... it was insane when I went vtec... I thought something had to be about to break, haha (the res. makes an incredible difference... 16"L, 4"body... go longer if you want it even quieter)

Re: How to make a Lude sound good?

2.25 with no cat or resonator and a 40-series is nauseating... speaking from past experience.

Tanabe Medallion or Skunk2 Mega Power FTW. Definitely get a resonator too...

Re: How to make a Lude sound good?

Whatever you do, PLEASE dont get 4" tips... My neighbor has a SICK Integra type-r, straight up JDM Type R parts... and then he goes and puts a 4" tip on it...
Now it LITERALLY sounds like a giant can of beans bouncing around every time he takes it past 3k rpm...

yeah, the stock cat made it tolerable, but pointless... I got a good deal on the delta flow. I needed a cheap fix on the h23, **** ton of miles and no definitive plan at the time so I was like "what the hell, I'll try it"...
