Type S Pistons

Hey guys,

So once I get my exhaust on, I'm obviously going to do more work to Sophie and I was considering getting the Type S pistons and bumping the CR to 11:1. What all is involved in this? Just drop the pistons, and slip on the new ones? Is it worth it? Going all motor.

Re: Type S Pistons

I would assume it's that easy (obviously you're going to want to use new rings/head gasket, the obvious ****) but don't quote me. Maybe bump it up to 93+ octane gas if you aren't already running it (and if you aren't, SHAME on you!). Awesome fail picture ftw.

Re: Type S Pistons

Cool. I just gotta make sure I get the right combo of A & B pistons. Which apparently can be a PITA finding the B type-s ones.

And Sophie gets nothing but 93!

Re: Type S Pistons

Thatta boy. I've never put anything less than 93 in my car, and as far as I know, there has never been anything less in the tank, EVER. The first owner was an old guy who drove it on the weekends, the second was a HUGE Honda enthusiast who did lots of the work to it, the third was a bro in high school that almost did TOO much maintenance to the car, and the 4th is me. Yeah, the B Type-S pistons can be a huge ****ing problem to get a hold of.

Re: Type S Pistons

it would also be a good idea to get a fresh hone, new rings, and of course a cometic head gasket.

what is the difference between the A & B pistons, never heard of that?

Re: Type S Pistons

The A and B sizing actually refers to different piston diameters. On standard H22A1 engines, A = 86.990 to 87.003mm, and B = 86.980 to 86.993mm. The service limits vary as following as well...A = 86.980mm, B = 86.970mm. Those are the only differences between pistons marked "A" and "B."

P.S. - Obviously this is on an H22A1, so the numbers might differ on the H22A4/Type-S pistons/etc... But I was just trying to indicate what the A/B marking was for.

No problem. Not THAT huge of a difference between A/B, but you would definitely notice if you put the wrong ones in lol..

I guess I could do that for now. Then save up for the 89x95 build. That way I'll have the 11:1 CR while I save parts / cash

Re: Type S Pistons

I kinda have to agree. Instead of doing a head build I think I'm just going to wait another year or two and get another H22 and just build the whole damn thing. I would advise against spending money just to tide yourself over until you get what you really want.

B pistons are slightly oversize, so that if when rebuilding the engine you need a rebore or hone then you can still have pistons that fit.

Though that's the first time I've heard them referred to as A and B though.

Over on PP somewhere i was reading about this, which gave me the idea of doing type S pistons, and they said they were marked with an "A" or a "B" on each individual piston. Same for the USDM ones

It's possible, I'm just saying that I've never heard of them referred to as A or B slugs. Only ever heard them referred to as normal or oversized.

Gotcha. There's a guy selling 4 "B" pistons on PP for 225 shipped. Awesome deal IMO, that's why I considered doing this.
