Icon5 Manual Tranny fluid?

So I was at valvoline like a month ago getting my oil changed.. (I would rather do it myself, but everytime I do I make a huge mess and ruin a shirt) and on the price chart thing on the wall, it says they do Manual Transmission Fluid changes for 39.99

I did some looking around, and no one ever seems to talk about manual fluid changes. Automatics use fluid to operate, but manuals aren't hydralic.
It would make sense if there was some oil in there to keep the parts rotating properly and stuff.

Does the manual tranny just use engine oil?
Or does it really have its own fluid?
Does it need to be changed at some interval?

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

huh.. well alright mystery solved

http://www.inlinefour.com/honmantranfl.html

If I can find my repair manual I'll see if I can find out how to do it myself and how much fluid is needed.

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

my car calls for 10-30 motor oil for the tranny, but i've only actually used it with that once, a couple years ago i used GM syncromesh in it, then after that i went to pennzoil syncromesh, both of which seemed to work pretty good, and now im running Honda MTF in it and haven't had any problems so far

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

I just changed my MTF last Saturday.

For a 5th Gen you will need:
- 2 quarts of Honda MTF, or your favorite MTF
- Funnel with long enough hose to get to the fill bolt from under the hood
- 17mm wrench for fill bolt
- 14mm wrench for drain bolt
- Something to hold the old MTF

Helpful pictures:

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

honda MTF only...i just changed mine last week. dont use anything else. and as badbb6 said its 2.5 quarts, not 2 you dont want to be a half quart short...

DO NOT take your lude to just any old shop to get it done b.c they wont put the correct fluid in it... they will put **** hole stuff in it that is not good for a honda tranny...if you dont do it yourself take it to the dealership so they put the right stuff in.

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

Is it 2.5 quarts or just 2 quarts?

A 5th gen with the M2Y4 transmission says 2.0 qt at oil change in the manual.

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

Could someone post the hole you can fill it through from the top?

Is it under the VSS or near it?

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

Is it a plastic type clip you remove or a rubber cap?

OR

Are you removing the whole VSS and filling through the hole under the VSS?

Thanks!

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

here is an exploded pic of your transmission.

you will want to remove #12 to drain it, which a 3/8 ratchet will fit right in there. then put that bolt back in and remove #15 to fill it up. just do like 94ludeguy said and buy three quarts and keep filling it til fluid comes out of the hole.

Thanks 1BadBB6 and 94ludeguy

Does anyone have a picture of the hole you can fill the transmission fluid through the VSS?

Re: Manual Tranny fluid?

its not thru the VSS, you don't even touch the VSS. don't even go near it.

you already posted the picture of the fill bolt. thats what you take out to fill the fluid thru.
