Clunking noise

Hey all,

Driving home tonight I noticed a clunking noise as I hit the accelerator. I messed around with it on the way home, and (as far as I could tell) it only happens after I brake, and then accelerate. It's a fairly defined clunking noise, and the harder I hit the gas, the louder it is. It's not incredibly loud, but it's noticeable with the radio off.

Any ideas? Things to look for? What more info you need?

make sure the big center nut is tight, although i doubt the axle is your problem, its good to check. just check your motor mount first though because that is the easiest

Re: Clunking noise

Yeah make sure your axle nut is on all the way. I forgot what it's supposed to be torqued to (I think like 300 ft/lbs or something huge), but make sure you beat on it with a chisel to lock it in place in that little notch.

Re: Clunking noise

Weird, the noise stopped today... I looked at the motor mounts, nothing seemed out of the ordinary... I'll check the axles. Anything specific I could have missed on the mounts?

Re: Clunking noise

mine does this when it's cold outside and the motor is just starting. it happens when i take off and when i'm in neutral and put it back in gear. after it warms up or if it's warm outside there's no problem.

Re: Clunking noise

Mine does that too in the winter, althought it's not coming from the engine bay. It's just all the struts that get cold over time. After about 10 minutes of drivng mine stop doing it.
