Turbo B.O.V.'s and how they work...?

Hey all,

Just a bit confused on exactly what a BOV is for a turbo unit, can anyone clear things up for me?

Thanks!

Re: Turbo B.O.V.'s and how they work...?

In basic terms the blow off valve releases the pressure in your intake that has been compressed by the turbo. If you didnt have a blow off valve (re-circulatory or atmospheric... explained down below) then the air from your intake would go back the wrong way through your intake, push out backwards through the turbo and created compressor surge. It'll destroy your turbo.

atmospheric BOV's release the air from your intake under your engine compartment
(fast and the furious, when they rev up and let go ... a PSHHHH sound)
and re-circulatory drop the air back into the intake BEFORE the turbo, this way the air is right there for the turbo to suck up again, or it can be released through the filter without going back through the turbo.

Its possible to have an atmospheric BOV that recirculates though. A buddy of mine bought one for his evo 10. It releases some of the air (to make a cool sound) and dumps the rest into the intake so It can be sucked up again and used by the turbo.

Thats the basics of it. There are also diaphragm and piston type, and all kind of other things that go along with it. Like I said, thats the basics

Thanks, helped clear things up tons (still confusing, but overall starting to grasp the concept).

Now, this may sound "rediculous"... but is there any way to get the BOV sound without running a turbo? Essentially just to sound cool one would say.

there is that ^^^^ and there is a speaker that can get placed under your hood with a button in the cabin. But I dont recommend anyone doing that. Never. Its stupid IMO, and you gain nothing from it, but cool points if people really believe it. If not your just going to get made fun of.

Get a real turbo set up and get a BOV

You could keep a pepper shaker in the car, and every time you change gears you just shake some out, then hang your head out the window and sneeze.

Very bad idea.

Though after driving with a fake bov for a few months (and having been caught out) you would be in a prime position to take down the haterz once you actually do get boosted.
