Icon5 Me or the Dealership?

This thread is about replacing my timing belt. I am rapidly approaching 100K and that means i have about 5k miles worth of time to prep/save for this job. The main issue here is money. I have the tools and know-how to do this...it's just that i am a cheap bastard.

I was looking into it and I figured i'd get yalls input before I spend any money.

So here is Honda's quote (unofficially, but i got the guys card):

$650.00
Includes: Timing belt, water pump, all other belts replaced, new engine coolant, new valve cover gasket, some other seals that i dont know about, some other part i dont know about, and he said he would throw in a free valve adjustment since the valve cover is coming off anyways.
total time: 3-5 hours. Labor is included at $85/hr.

Here is what i would be looking at for a DIY:

Honda tensioner/placeholder tool from Honda: $111.00
T-belt - (Greddy) $30.00
Water pump - about $100
feeler guage - $10
Shop fee - $8/hour
it would probably take me like 2 full 8 hour days just b/c i am a very thorough person....so i guess total shop fee would be close to $130 or so.
I wasnt planning on replacing the other belts b/c they are already fairly new

Rough estimate: $400 but i figure i am forgetting something.

So what am i forgetting? I was also thinking of getting some cam gears while I'm pulling all this apart anyways. opinions? I thought the dealer was going to be closer to $1000 so i was originally planning on doing it myself. Their deal doesnt sound half bad though. I am contemplating spending extra money just to prevent busted knuckles...

Re: Me or the Dealership?

that is not a bad price at all for the dealer to be doing the work.

but...

like you said if you do it it'll be thorough which is always best. the upgrades you'd do yourself and the time you spend would be well worth it. even if it took you five 8 hour days isn't it a lot better knowing it was done right and no corners were cut in the process?

by opinion is since you have the know how you should make the time and do it yourself.

good luck and keep us all posted as to your final decision.

DO IT YOURSELF
it wont take as long as you think... and 650 from honda ... I DUNNO BOUT THAT.
to bad your not closer i would hook you up.

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...FT-TIMING+BELT

just the timing belt, new tensioner, balancer belt, possibly new adjuster... is gonna be almost 200-
i would do it yourself and do a MANUAL TENSIONER conversion. its safer and more reliable then the auto tensioner... ive seen those fail several times. (well the after effect of a broken tensioner, results bent valves/possible scarred pistons. ) if i can help you... save your money lemme know.

Re: Me or the Dealership?

I'm approaching 100K myself and the dealer was telling me $800. I don't think that price sounds too bad for the work and stuff. But if you can do it your self, I say save some money and do that. I personally have read and asked about that kinda work. From what I've heard, it's a really risky thing for someone to mess with if they've never done it before. I will leave it to the pro's to do mine.

Re: Me or the Dealership?

listen... i worked at baron honda dealership in my home town.... ive seen the work/overpricing/hassles that the dealerships have to offer. sometimes your better off taking matters into your hands... i just dont like seeing people waste their money... i used to be the guy that dished out the money to shops to fix things because i thought they would do a better job then i ever could.... I WAS VERY WRONG... now with the resources available you can honestly do almost anything yourself... do your homework its not hard trust me. if you were closer i would give you a good deal on everything you wanted to do. i was a honda mechanic... i am still a mechanic and i specialize in preludes/accords as my hobby. if i can be of any assistance... honestly message me even if its guiding you through.

Re: Me or the Dealership?

thanks man. I was the honda specialist too at my old shop, it was more for interior/electrical work though. I hate taking my car to the shop too. in fact, the only time i have ever even done it was to get tires put on the rims b/c i didnt have access to the balancer. You are motivating me to do it myself just b/c of the fact i would be doing it myself. I already looked into the service manual and the DIY on pz and i know i can do it. I just dont want to pay $111 for that stupid part! dammit!

Re: Me or the Dealership?

Parts to replace.

H20 Pump
T-Belt
Balance Belt
V/C gasket (also do spark plug tube O-rings as well) Just get a V/C gasket set
Both external belts
T-Belt tensioner

and get a valve adjust while your at it.

Possible parts to replace
Ft crank seal
Both cam seals
Crank bolt
Key way for crank pulley
Check condition of crank pulley as the rubber in it goes to crap over time.

I feel I am forgetting something though.

Re: Me or the Dealership?

since you did your clutch job yourself, you'll be able to tackle the t-belt job no problemo. hardest part is getting the crank pulley off.

but a honda crank pulley holder and 6' steel pipe, and that bolt became my bishhhhhh

Re: Me or the Dealership?

cool cool, that is good to know that overall it's not a bad job....i think when i save up some money after christmas i am gonna just take a few days leave and do it myself.

I did some more reading in the service manual which i will calling SM from now on b/c i hate typing that out...and i think the guy at Honda was confused when he quoted me $111 for the part that holds the auto-tensioner. I didnt have the part number with me but i am confident he was pricing the tensioner itself...there is no way that little piece of crap holder costs that much. this is a good thing!!!

I am gonna call the dealer tomorrow and get a quote on it. looks like P/N 14540-P13-003.

As far as the crank pulley....it says there are 2 special tools for that one too! Do I need to get them or will that little bastard come off with enough force?

Also, what do you guys think here, since i am pulling all this apart, what else should i do since i am in there? I mentioned it above that i was thinking about the cam gears. I dont know, i dont want to have to do this more than once i guess.

and thanks in advance everybody!

Re: Me or the Dealership?

Good deal. I mean if I was you I would do it myself ... but thats just me.

Take it from a car salesman. For the price you are getting it for ... Its not a bad deal. I would do it if I was in your sitiuation, but I dont know your mechanical abilities and what not ...

Do what you feel comfortable with. not what everyone tells you.

Re: Me or the Dealership?

i would always say DIY but in this case i would still pay the price and have it done from the dealership..at least you will know that the work is warrantied..just imagine if you mess something up and blow ur engine..the cost of that will be far more than the money u will be saving by doing it yourself.

Re: Me or the Dealership?

If i can do it and not kill a car i think u can dued. It took me a mint to man up and due it but it was not that bad i did have a few friends watching over my shoulder to make sure i didn't f@#k up. neck said you did your own clutch if this is true then i say go for it. Just rember this in not a lego set and if ya have a parts or 2 left over undo it all.

edit....I never did one on a lude but one was a v6 camery and a civic so could be a lot diffrent.

Re: Me or the Dealership?

CONFIDENCE... thats what it is all about. yea like a I SAID BEFORE
DO THE AUTO TENSIONER TO MANUAL TENSIONER CONVERSION. it is well worth it. and it makes it WAY easier to do.

TO DO WHILE YOUR "IN THERE"
valve cover gasket
cam shaft seals/ cam seal (the cam seal is next to the vtec selonoid on the head always leaks oil)
distributor seal
tbelt
balancer belt
water pump and rubber gasket
auto tensioner CRAP... get a manual setup off of h23 or f22!
do the valve adjustment not hard just time consuming
get some cam gears.... keep the upper half of the plastic cover off to show off those cam gears

Re: Me or the Dealership?

alright that sounds good. I am glad you guys know about the extra small stuff to do while i'll be in there. I dont doubt that i can do it, just super busy these days. But I think I am gonna do it....partly b/c I know if i asked the dealer to install those cams while they are in there they would jack up the price or void the warranty or something like that.

So why is the manual tensioner so much better? I wasn't planning on replacing it in the first place, i was just gonna get that special tool that holds it in place during the actual install.
