H22 with H23 crank + rods?

Hey all,

I was browsing around forums/screwing around not studying for my Differential Equations test on wednesday and I saw something about using the H23 crank and H23 rods in the H22 head.

I looked up a couple things on H-T where people converted their H23 stock motor to a VTEC motor, and they basically just stole a bunch of parts from a H22.
My question is would it be an easy install to just drop in the crank+rods from the H23 to have a cheap stroker kit for my H22? I looked up the measurements and everything matches up that should. Would I need a thicker head-gasket? Is this worth it at all? Can I use stuff from either a H23 or a H23a1 or do I have to use one or the other?

For reference, here's the measurements from the H22a4 and H23 motors:
Deck Height
H22A4 Block = 8.643
H23A block = 8.643
H23A1 block = 8.643

Bore
H22A4 Block = 87mm/3.425
H23A block = 87mm/3.425
H23A1 block = 87mm/3.425

Rod Length
H22A4 = 5.633
H23A = 5.572
H23A1 = 5.572

Rod Width
H22A4 = .935
H23A = .935
H23A1 = .935

Piston Bore
H22A4 = 87mm/3.425
H23A = 87mm/3.425
H23A1 = 87mm/3.425

Stroke
H22A4 = 90.7mm/3.570
H23A = 95mm/3.740
H23A1 = 95mm/3.740

Combustion Chamber Volume
H22A4 = 53.8cc
H23A = 53.8cc
H23A1 = 50cc

Intake Valve Diameter
H22A4 = 35mm
H23A = 35mm
H23A1 = 34mm

Exhaust Valve Diameter
H22A4 = 30mm
H23A = 30mm
H23A1 = 29mm

Head Gasket Bore
H22A4 = 88mm
H23A = 88mm
H23A1 = 88mm

Head Gasket Thickness
H22A4 = .026
H23A = .026
H23A1 = .026

^^ Props to H-T for numbers

Re: H22 with H23 crank + rods?

Crank and rods don't go in the head dood. :33: Haha I know what you mean though. As far as I know the H23 crank will work with the H22 block, and the H23 rods have a longer stroke, but I think they will work. Not sure if you will need a thicker head gasket or anything though.

Re: H22 with H23 crank + rods?

I remember that the h23 crank and rods don't work with the h22 block. Basically, I believe the either of the h23 blocks will work. One thing to figure out is your pistons. The jdm h22 pistons will work, but I think your piston-to-head clearance needs to be worked on. This is a great link: http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=510617

True that. That seems to be the most debated part of the build. Between that and whether or not "fitting" the oil squirters are neccessary.

And again depending on your clearance for the pistons would determine the thickness of your head gasket, or you could get the head milled. Also, you can use a thicker headgasket to drop the compression down a little to a safer level depending on your piston choice.

i also highly recommend full engine balancing (crank, rods, pistons, crank pulley)

x10...

Its a silly build if you dont balance the rotating assembly!

Search some more for more info. theres alot of h23vtecs running around including ones Ive built and even the guy I quoted is running one..

Re: H22 with H23 crank + rods?

I found lots of articles about h23->h23vtec builds, but I haven't seen anything about h22vtec->h23vtec

Thanks for the links, it's a lot to dig through.

Nice!

What all did you need to do it? What oil squirters did you end up using?
