vtec problem.....

Hey guys, was comin home from a mates house yesterday, and was doing around 90mph/150kmh, and went to drop from 5th to 4th in my Lude, and accidentally hit for 2nd! Not good.
Since doing this, it does not engage vtec anymore, only revs to around 6500rpm.....
What have i done to my pride and joy?
All help appreciated!
Andy.

Re: vtec problem.....

Sounds like you're in limp mode. Go get your codes pulled ASAP. Misshift at 90 into second is not good lol. I would imagine that would put the engine at over 10k rpms...not healthy. Any smoke, weird noises/smells, or other differences in driving it?

Nothing at all different about her, no smoke, weird noises, etc. at all, just no Vtec.....
I thought when in "limp" mode it wouldn't go over 5k rpm, mines goes to 6.5k rpm. When you say get my codes pulled, how do i do that?
Thanks again for the help guys.
Andy.

Re: vtec problem.....

you are damn lucky you are still driving it, and that the engine runs and you didn't rip the drive axles right off (true story... cousin-in-law misshifted into 2nd on interstate and that car was done).

Re: vtec problem.....

Ok, done the ECU reset there, car is now engaging vtec, but not at the right point, anything fom 6k -7.5k rpm. Any ideas?
Also, when i turn the ignition on, should my CEL light come on with all the other dash lights? As it doesn't seem to.
Thanks again guys.

Yes! Either the bulb is burned out or removed.

Re: vtec problem.....

well... the vtec engagedment is technically 5200 rpm... but you would feel the full effect at like 6000 cause there secondary intake runners in the intake manifold that open at full load at 6000 so your vtec would feel stronger at that point....

That's so helpful. Umm... Yeah are you sure there's even a bulb behind your check engine light? You might wanna check to make sure it's there or if it's just burnt out or something. If VTEC isn't engaging you should definitely have a CEL. And as far as "Pulling Codes," if you have a 1996 or newer Prelude, you can just go to Autozone or something and they will check to see if you are throwing any codes. If your car is older than '96, it's not OBD2 so I dunno what you do in that case.

Re: vtec problem.....

if you pull the code on OBD 1 you can find out what it is. I dunno if they have it on this site, but i know some site has the code translations as i've used it a couple time. but as for what your problem could be, i'm not really sure, not much of a vtec person
