Re: ac or not

Well obviously it's a weight savings, but I'm interested in doing this too. It gets hot around here in the summer but I didn't use it once all year, that's what windows/sunroof are for. I couldn't imagine removing it making more than a 3hp difference though. Anyone know for sure? Someone test it on the dyno I'm broke lol.

Re: ac or not

When it's not being used it doesn't cost anything but weight.

My advice would be to leave it in if you ever plan on selling the car. Could be a little hard to reason with a potential buyer as to why you took it out.

What do you hope to achieve by removing it? If it's weight loss you're after, I'd look somewhere else, you might pick up maybe 10kg by removing a/c. Just leave it there and don't use it if you don't want to.

Re: ac or not

I wouldn't remove AC unless my car was strictly for drag. I'd be more up for removing power steering and ABS.

Re: ac or not

Think about the 1 time you get stuck in stopped traffic for an hour and its 97 degrees outside. How much will you wish you didnt remove the A/C just to lose a few lbs?

Re: ac or not

Leave it on if you have no reason for removing it.
If you decide to sell it, it's irritating to have to put **** back on because most people don't want to buy cars without ac. If you boost and it needs to be taken off, that's another thing or if you're building an N/A beast and shedding all the extra weight you can but don't just take stuff off for no reason. It'll only cause problems.

Re: ac or not

I removed the belt and I noticed a significant increase in power, best mpg I ever got as well. That's a much better way to delete with out making it irreversible. I have since put it back on, although I never use it, especially since it squeals.

You do need it when moisture builds up on your windshield, especially in the winter. Also if you ever have people riding in it and you don't want to hear them complaining the entire time.

You could also get an electric water pump, that would get you some extra HP, especially up high, I've heard as much as 10whp.

Re: ac or not

Or take the belt off your power steering. That certainly helped my fuel mileage. I'm getting 32-34 mpg now. I never use my AC except a few summer days with the heat index is 118 and humidity is 90%

Re: ac or not

Screw it, take all 3 off. If only we didn't need the alternator, we'd be good to go. I would like to see a dyno and mpg comparison with those 3 accessories off/on.

Any takers?

Re: ac or not

Does taking your PS belt off really gain more mpg? I had a 2G and I cut mine off for the fact that I liked the tighter steering and seemed like I could handle the curves better... until I wrecked

Yes, your engine requires less effort to do the same amount of work.
