Icon5 battery/alternator/recharging problems?

ok, i live so close to my college (like 1/4 mile) that i usually ride my bike every single day, except when its raining, then i'll take the TurboLude.

but when i take VERY short trips (to campus for example) when i get back in the car to leave, when i try to crank it, it sounds like the starter just clicking very fast, like a taser gun. this has happened twice this week. the first time it eventually started after an hour, and the second time i got a jump start from a professor (in a V6 camaro ). but the battery isn't completely dead, cuz ALL the electronics work!!! it just clicks when i crank it.


now lemme know if this is whats causing it: since my dumptube is hacked up, so when the wastegate opens, the exhaust gases shoot almost DIRECTLY at the alternator, but from about 1.5 feet away.


is it just the very short trips that are killing my battery? or is it the wastegate issue fukin w/ the alternator, in turn not charging the battery? or both?
regardless, i'm gettin the downpipe and dumptube thingy fixed whenever i can.

I had a similar problem on short trips. the car would crank but wouldn't start. it was the starter.

if you hear the starting clicking and the car isn't cranking, the battery is being drained by an insufficient altenator.

i would say the alternator also. cuz if its not putting out enough amps then the car will start to pull from the battery.and since you are not driving far enough then its not giving it enough time to recharge fully. see if you can get it tested at a advanced or autozone

also how old is the battery

battery can't be but 2 years old. everlast(good band) or everlong(good song) or everstart or w/e it is.

since i have a multimeter @ home, whats it posta read? 14.2 volts or somethin like that??


*edit* oh, get the ALT tested, not the batt. gotcha!

How long should an alt and battery last? As far as I know mine have never been changed. (1998 car)

okay .... fast clicks... (taser thats a good description lol) is always the battery being to low to start the car.... yea your electronics might work..but they dont pull alot of current.... well not like your starter does. yea since you dont drive far your battery wouldnt be able to charge enough....but if your battery is already done for ... it wouldnt hold a charge at all. while running your battery should produce 13-14.4volts . battery when connected to the car but engine not running you should be around 10.5 to 12.4 volts.

and red98... batterys usually last 3-5 years w/ regular use. sometimes people get really lucky and they last way longer then expected. it is good as regular maintenance to get a new battery every 3-5 years anyways...that way you know that your battery wont just die one day .... and yea that does happen without warning. hope this helps.

everlong is a good song....but the battery could also just be a weak battery. not necessarily a bad one. not holding a full charge for whatever reason. the best way to tell is to do a load test on it. the battery should never drop below 10v or so under load. i would take it to a parts place and have em test it. but never remove a battery cable to see if an alternator is working right. it can cause voltage sp!kes and and fry your ECU.

i don't wanna mention how much it was for a shop to tell me that
