Turbo-ing? please help UBER NOOB

So I have always been all for N/A cars, however I've got to thinking after my day to the junk yard!

As my last post states, I went to the junk yard got some stuff and looked at some stuff, and then I got an idea

I've never really been into boosting, however while I was at the junk yard I came across some older vehicles with small turbo's still on them for example: older Volvos, Saab, Audi's, Talons and other cars.

is it possible to run on of those smaller older turbos on my H23, like I said, turbo-ing has never sparked interest in me so I know little on the topic.

is it hard to set up using an older model?
is it even possible?
what would I need?

Re: Turbo-ing? please help UBER NOOB

DSM setup:
1st or 2nd gen (preferably 1st) manifold bolts right up to H23/F22 heads, with the redrilling of like 2 holes. then the stock 14b turbo, or if you get lucky and find a 16g or even 18g, even better!
you can use the injectors and BOV as well, so thats like 1/2 of a full turbo kit for about.... $500.

then all you need is:
intercooler (ebay)
IC piping (ebay)
walbro fuel pump
some sort of engine management (chipped ecu or standalone, but ppl don't usually run standalone's for a junkyard setup for obvious reasons)
and downpipe

Re: Turbo-ing? please help UBER NOOB

Extremely sorry for my lack of turbo knowledge!
DSM: Diamond star motors = Mitsubishi? correct?
14b,16g,18g: size of turbo: correct
BOV: (no brainer) blow of valve?

why can't I use the stock intercooler, IC piping, and down pipe, off the car?

can I use any other set up like a volvo's, or ford talon's, or another in general?

once again sorry for lack of knowledge

Re: Turbo-ing? please help UBER NOOB

the dsm intercoolers are side mounted if the even have one so there will be no room to put on. its gotta be front mount. and the intercooler piping on their cars wont be of any help cuz the bends are nothing like you need.

cb7tuner.com is your friend. for this setup

yep, yep, and yepp. your gettin a hang of this.

stock IC not only is side-mounted, but not as efficient as front mounts.
the piping isn't gonna be bent correctly for our cars, since its off something completely different.

if you feel like toying with different setups, be my guest. but i can garantuee none of them are gonna be as easy to install as the DSM setup.

the "T#" thing is sort of a stage of performance, lower numbers being less powerful, higher numbers being more powerful, blah blah, you get the idea.

Re: Turbo-ing? please help UBER NOOB

there's so many diff trims and a/r's and wheel sizes and housing sizes and etc of turbo's that there are literally millions of combinations out there. it just takes some time and research to figure out what all of them are/mean

www.homemadeturbo.com is a GREAT site to start learning about turbo's. but whatever you do, don't post newb questions like this over there. you'll get flamed out the wazoo. just research, research, research!!!!

Re: Turbo-ing? please help UBER NOOB

My friend has a 2nd gen Talon and he took off his T25 for the 14B and I really want his T25. Just to have, just in case boosting every came up for my car.

But yeah, good luck with trying to turbo your car if you go for it. I for one think a junk yard turbo setup would be bad ass. And I would do it if I didn't have a N/A goal in mind for my car.

Re: Turbo-ing? please help UBER NOOB

Basically when boosting you need the following:

Turbo itself
Exhaust Manifold
Downpipe
Wastegate
Intercooler
Blow off valve
Fuel Manegment (chipped and tuned ECU)
Wideband o2 sensor
Walbro 255 lph fuel pump
Bigger injectors
Intercooler Piping
Assorted couplers/t-bolts
Oil drain/feed lines
Oil pressure, boost, and a/f gauges
Copper spark plugs
Radiator (Depending on the manifold and turbo size)
Fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator

You also may have to remove your A/C and/or power steering.
Keep in mind, that's a basic idea of what's needed.

hey.. sorry to kinda butt in. but i'm thinking about doing the same thing to my h23 lude. why do you suggest 1g over 2g manifold? i've been told that their the same thing just the 2g;s are built stronger and have better flow????

Well atleast you searched before you made a thread. Thank you.

I believe (from what I've been told) the manifolds are made stronger, and the ports are larger. I could be wrong though.

You have to re-drill 2 holes. I'm not sure which 2.
