Targa-Top Preludes?

I was just browsing some cars and came accross a stock twin turbo Supra that is for sale for $8,000...don't know why so cheap...maybe a typo.

Anyways, I really like the targa top look to it. Kind of curious what it looks like on Preludes (mainly 4th gen) if that has been done before...???

Re: Targa-Top Preludes?

i was just talking to bustr (97predator) about doin a targa top. i love the idea. i think it would be sick. so i spoke to my buddy who owns Extreme Auto Body near me. he said the chop would be easy and not crazy expensive but the actual targa top would be real expensive to have custom made to fit. just my .02

Re: Targa-Top Preludes?

I'd be more worried about losing the integrity of the chassis or something. Or rollover protection.

Granted, a targa top Prelude would look incredibly super cool, but just be too much work I think.

I think the 4th gen would look cooler as a targa top.

i dont know how expensive it would be, i mean what about using a targa top from like a corvette or sometihng?\

Just cut the top to the specs of the targa.

as for rollover protection--- how about a custom roll cage??? bwhahaha god i wish i had the money to match my crazy ideas :-)

hmm i nned to go out in the garage and do some measurements... i've got 2, 1982 corvette targa tops sitting in my garage :D

lol because i'm stupid i just went and put it on top of my car and yea its too narrow. but i'm sure that a newer corvette's top would probably be wide enough.

http://www.webastoshowroom.com/21Hon..._524_2006.html

thats an option--- kinda defeats the idea of a targa if sides are still there, thats just more of a huge sunroof than anything else.

if they can do it on this i dont see why it can't be done on a prelude:

Yep you are risking A LOT with that. There are support beams in the roof you have to accommodate for. You have to reinforce the rockers and pretty much cage the entire car for it to NOT twist. Also have to figure out something with the B-pillars. There is so much structural support you would need to make up in order to make this happen.

If you want it done right it will cost a pretty penny, bue to half ass it, well lets just say good luck!

Looks fantastic IMO, perfect car for hot summer arvos, and cruising on warm nights with the tunes pumping.

Re: Targa-Top Preludes?

Hey i'm new here! seen this thread from another site and and just want to say. I'm a welder fabricator i've read alot of the comments here and really a targa top wouldn't be all that difficult to do. cut necessary section from roof with car supported, fabricate a drip rail front and back on the car then fabricate a hemmed edge on the cutout section of the roof so the two fit togather with room and an edge for rubber seal on the car car sides heck if ya want to get fancy fab the roof section to accept a seal as well this part is childs play really. onec you have everything fabbed and fitting properly time for some lock perches and pads. I personally would use a cam style or draw lock making sure the mounting points for the rubber seals are high enough and seals thick enough that when the locks on the frontside (behind windshield) are applied that the roof seam sits level. for the back side i would use a simple slide in tab and groove mounted so as to pull the seams level when locks are applied.

As for structure: use two pieces of rectangular tube or square tube just thin enough that they can be hidden under the car bolting to the front subframe mounts and running back to the rear rear subframe with bolt in points there as well. now construct a rollcage that bolts to the subframe conectors through the floor and mounting plates start in the back seat area working forwards with mount points at the farthest rear portion then just behind the door jambs just in front of the doorjambs and finally firewall. use triangulation and gussets for rigidity this way you can keep the center section of the cage down low and out of site except when doors are open. add windshield bar for support in a rollover that easily ties in at the front of the doorjambs being minimally intrusive. add a "headache" bar behind the front seats and support it into the rear portion of the cage This can even be done without completly loosing the rear seat. and there you have it! A targa topped Prelude that is safe and has far better structeral integrity than stock and you've added 75-125 lbs maximum!! Now you can go even further if you want to lighten the load a little and remove some factory body support metal and lots of other unneeded extra body metal weight from the inside factory structure (Ibet you can loose more than you gained in the cage). while your at it you've come this far you mays well finish your "tube chassis" by removing the fenders hood ect cutting away the stub rails and rad support and replaceing that all with tube keep in mind strut perches will have to be fabricated an correctly places so measure before you cut. All in All if you can do the work yourself and have a decent price on steel tube like i do at $2-$6 a foot for pipe and the sheared mounting brackets for around $3-$5 each i'm going to estimate cost of supplies between $$500 -$1000 for dom 1 3/4" 3/16" wall tubing. around $50-$100 for the subframe conectors, mounting plates for $60-$100 and maby $50-$75 in grade 8 bolts and nuts. rubber doorjamb seals are around $2-$5 a foot so $20 -$60 and miscelanous pieces maby another $50 let's say $250- $300 in mig wire a $100 bottle of mig gas and your pretty well good to go. minus paint. for a grand total of $1785 give or take. soo i'll just round that up to $2000 thats pretty reasonable considering you now have a full tube chassis car with a cool ass targa top and it weighs considerably less than when you started.

hell i'ts $500 just to get someone to install a ****ty manual sunroof... and you don't get any of the cool options. I say Targa top is totally worth it guys. A rollcage is so simple to build!! even so it's mostly hidden. The hell with upgrading my car to a 97 an up glass sunroof i'm doing this as soon as possible!!!
