H22a FTMFW!

Alright so many, if not all of you, know my engine has had its days. Most would suspect "****! at 200k+ miles that things gotta be worn down!" this is what i thought too!

today in automotives class we did the compression test...

new maximum: 200 Psi
service Minimum: 130 Psi
normal: 180 Psi

so we ran the numbers...
from left to right we got this...

1. 2. 3. 4.
195 187 190 190

holy ****, thats ****ing mind boggling for 200 thousand! now for the leakdown, oil in all cylinders the compression went...

1. 2. 3. 4.
200! 190 195 195

woot! the rings arent as bad as we assumed.
NOW what does this mean? it means that elliots bet to me running this thing to 500k miles is oh so very likely!!

we also vacuum tested it and it passed with FLYING colors!

This thread will be completely dedicated to the beautifully designed h22 and i officaly say i am NOT ashmamed to be on this fine piece of machinery's bandwagon!

Did you ever do a cylinder leakage test tho...? I just did an engine that had perfect compression and cylinder balance tests but was an EPIC FAILURE with the cylinder leakage test - it went 55%, 80%, 74% and 84% leak - all air was leaking out the intake valves too!!

This is an important test, do NOT forget to do it!!

nah dude, remember how i went to michigan that one week and was with a guy who had a prelude? we compression tested it and it had lower numbers than mine, but we fond out why, nt really sure why a stock motor blew a headgasket at that mileage but anything is possible, could have been a lemon gasket ya know?

didnt uh phil or someone say you had a leak or something and you fixed it? i dont remember, nor do i knwo the year and mileage of your car haha.


to the other guy,
yes re read my post, we did a leakdown and the numbers went up my +/- 5psi

i need new valve seals and probably a grind, those would be nice, might restore that compression up to 190+ on that 2nd cylinder. but atleast we know where the blue smoke is comming from and it isnt from the piston rings.

A leakdown test is different then a cylinder leakage test homeskillet.

For the cylinder leakage test you take out the sparkplugs, screw in a connector with a hose, plug that into a tool that has a gauge for reading percent leak and then plug the tool into an air compressor. The air compressor pushes constant air into the cylinder while the tool reads what percentage of the air is leaking out, then you go around and listen/feel for the air leak (in your case it would be leaking out of the throttle body because the valves are bad )

This is completely different then a leakdown test and you will get readings in PERCENTAGES, not PSI

Haha - don't feel dumb, I was just letting you know. The engine we are working on, like I said, had perfect compression across all 4 cylinders, but the air leak percentage was HORRIBLE. We had to do this test before we started ripping our engine apart, I am currently in Engine Rebuilding right now, so that's why I was just asking, I'm sure you will get around to it. And besides - this test is not only extremely important,so I know they wont skip over it, but it is amazing because you can hear almost EXACTLY where the air is coming out, and in the case of your engine, you could feel the air escaping out the throttle body, it was real awesome

Nice!! I got one for ya tho - did this the other day on our engine we are working on:

Take out the sparkplug (any of them, don't matter) and then leave it out. Disconnect the ignition so the car WILL NOT START. After disconnecting the ignition put the sparkplug WIRE back in (no sparkplug, just wire)

Turn the key and watch the magic

We did this totally by accident cause we went on break and then came back, so when we put the wire back in without the sparkplug in there we had no idea, my friend turned the key and BOOM - the sparkplug wire flew out of the cylinder directly at my face, luckily it was still disconnected to the distributor so it didn't hit me

how's THAT for stupid

We were thinking of trying it with marshmallows but our instructor put an end to that REAL quick...he's just ants at a picnic

as er' body know the h22's have a good bit of compression and we have this tool to sense TDC that you put in the plug hole and then it whistles when your at TDC (the air blows up the tube) [no homo] and we forgot to hold it down and WHIIISTT! it flew up and hit the 13ft celing hahahahahahaha

i Swear to you all,
if we had EOTM (engine of the month) id probably be first nominated, nore freaking INSANE news, which is becoming the norm.

we did the Rev drop test today, (pull a plug see how much it drops)
did it old school and it looked liek ti weas droping, but you cant rely on the tach to do a rev drop test, s we hooked up our SUN scan tool and?

less than 10 RPM's per cylinder, crap thats good!
