How do I change my fuel filter

Sorry if this is posted somewhere, but I could not find it.

Does anyone know where I can find a guide to changing my fuel filter in my 4th gen?

I heard it's a pain in the exit.

Re: How do I change my fuel filter

I found a a guide on superhonda.com forum

I replaced my fuel filter yesterday and figured i'd do a half ass write up while it was fresh in my mind.

What you need:

-new fuel filter (got mine from honda came with 3 new washers as well. it was like $24)
-12mm box wrench
-14mm open end wrench
-17mm box wrench
-10mm socket wrench w/ short extention
-a rag you dont mind getting a little gasoline on

1. Remove gas cap

2. Relieve fuel pressure by loosening the 12 mm bolt on the right side of your fuel rail. Loosen it one full turn. No gas came out when I did it, but some people recommend covering it with a rag as youre doing it just in case.

3. Remove the two fuel lines (in and out) on the top of your exisiting fuel filter. There are two washers on the 17mm bolt that you will need to replace when you put the new filter on. The other line is a 14mm that you need to use an open end wrench to take out. You can use your rag to clean up any spillage, but I might have spilled a tsp of gas at the most...

4. Using your 10mm socket (1/4" drive worked the best for me) remove the top two bolts that hold the fuel filter bracket to the firewall. (I needed to use a 3" extention to get to these suckers)

5. Pull the entire thing out. I dumped the gas out of it (in a safe place). The gas in my filter looked very clean, and I probably didn't even need to replace mine. Some people claim that it is a lifetime product that doesnt need replacement. I read somewhere (might have been my Helms) that it should be replaced every 60,000 miles so i'd rather be safe than sorry. I have also heard of people dumping out the gas in the fuel filter and it being all nasty, so who knows.

6. Remove the other two 10mm bolts which hold the fuel filter onto the bracket. Pay attention to how the old one was positioned because you will need to put the new one on the same way the old one sat. This way the hard fuel line that lays horizontal will fit back in.

7. Position your new fuel filter on the bracket the same way the old one sat and then put those bottom two bolts back in.

8. After cleaning everything you dirtied up (all the fittings, etc) reconnect the 2 fuel lines and the top two bolts to the firewall in whichever order you'd like (i reconnected the lines first). Be sure to use the two new washers with that 17mm bolt. (note: the third washer is for the bolt you loosened on the fuel rail. since you didnt remove it, i don't see why you would need to replace it. -mine looked fine.)

9. Tighten up the 12mm bolt on the fuel rail.

10. Put your gas cap back on.

11. Smoke the cigarrette that you wanted to smoke the whole time you while doing this, but couldn't... hmm, maybe i shoulda mentioned that before step one

Hope this helps/helped anyone that plans on changing their filter. I hear its a BITCH to change the fuel filters on the 5th gens If anyone needs anymore info, or pics, or whatever, you know how to reach me.

Re: How do I change my fuel filter

Okay there's mention of the fuel rail and existing fuel filter.

I don't know where the fuel filter is...that's the main problem.

Re: How do I change my fuel filter

your fuel filter should be on the backside of the engine near the firewall in a kinda hard spot to reach from the top of the car, but if you go from the bottom it might be a little easier, just gotta get around the axles and what not...

You can always go to wiki answers - just type in "how do I change my 1997 honda prelude fuel filter" and wala! your golden

if you still have issues with it in a few days let me know, ill be back home from vacation and i can help you out alot more

Re: How do I change my fuel filter

i know, i didn't think that the fuel filter would be in a different spot i suppose...

it very well could be, but the H motors are all built the same and look the same, so I figured the fuel lines would all run the same...im probably wrong, but i figured i would try and help him out a lil seeing how he hadn't had any other responses from anyone

Re: How do I change my fuel filter

I got it figured out. It's on the passenger side of the firewall. Mine was kind of hidden behind an alarm horn, or maybe it's the car's horn. The bolt which drives in vertically I was able to unscrew with some effort. The other screw that screws in horizontally I can't unscrew for ****. It feels like it's welded. The car has 147,000 and I don't think a wrench has ever touched those screws. Any ideas? or good products to loosen/unfreeze it?

Re: How do I change my fuel filter

PB Blaster FTW, use that to loosen bolts all the time at work. Stick with using line wrenches, you don't want to round those bolts off. i would also say stick with a 6pt socket and a breaker bar.

IIRC, you can't use sockets, only open ended.

PBblaster or WD40 should help you out w/ that last bolt. as well as a gym membership.
