Power loss after bolt-ons - tuning suggestions

Hi everyone,

My stock 5th gen prelude (with Injen Short Ram) had 165 whp and 142 tq. Later on, I installed the Vibrant header and Brullen exhaust. The power now is 163 whp, 130 tq.

I know the main reason for this is my AF ratio. Today, my friend and I, found out how bad this really is.

I think I was in third gear, at around 2500 rpms, and I floored it (the numbers are accurate the best I can remember):
-2500 rpms - 12.9 <- air fuel
-as the rpms got higher the AF got worse
-before vtec - 12.5
-at 5250 rpms - 11.9
-around 6500 rpms - 11.5
-and finally at 7100 or so - 11.1

Can someone "technical" explain how this is possible? It seemed all of sudden because when I went earlier on dyno (April/May) I was stock and I was not running that rich, but after those bolt-ons, my lude was smoking like a chimney, better flow i guess.

Now, when I started all of this, I just wanted my car to sound better, I was not concerned with HP numbers, but now I am kind of forced to go step further and tune it.
I am asking for some suggestions on what to do next? Few extra ponies would not hurt.

Somehow I am leaning towards p28 + hondata s200, and would like to know some negatives in doing so.

Thank you.

maybe this should be moved to "Naturally Aspirated" section ... whatever admin likes : )

Re: Power loss after bolt-ons - tuning suggestions

Well the dyno can be off a few # b/c of all kind of conditions so not uncommon to lose or gain a few HP. As for as the A/F the only thing i could think of is the short ram is pulling in hot air from the engine bay. I say throw on the stock one drive it a lil and see what the A/F look like then.

Re: Power loss after bolt-ons - tuning suggestions

different dyno, temperature, humidity, as well as other factors can skew hp/tq numbers.

Re: Power loss after bolt-ons - tuning suggestions

thanks for the replies

yes my engine bay is extra hot now after installing that header

it was on the same dyno, the first time was probably a bit cooler

i do not want to put in the old intake, i would not drive like that

i have to fix the AF, whatever is the reason behind it

my choice is p28+hondata but want to hear someone who went this way, and if they had any problems with it?

Not for ever just as a test it takes just a few mints to do and could save you some time trying to find out why it's off. If it's really hot under the hood with the new headers and no heat shield and with a short ram would think that has a lot to do with it and the stock one with a KNN would still flows as good if not better then a short ram.

^ yea, that is possible... I don't have to worry about that here... if you kept a real cat on their you might be okay, it's impossible to say for sure... can vary so much.

I think getting the new ecu will clear the codes...? Anyone know if you check the codes the same way as the p13?
