Re: Is this Mandrel bent or Crush bent?

A mandrel bend uses heat and oil as the bender slides the piping through the bender. This resukts in no kinks or divits. Usually with new exhuast there would be 2 major ways to tell if its mandrel, one is visual inspection, there should be nor crush marks, incaves, or divets, it should be the same size diameter all the way down the pipe (this is why madrel is best you pipes inside diameter doesn't get smaller due to the bending process it stays the same size and effects preformance in usually a + way). The seconed way to tell is after installing the exhaust when it is warmed and hot the oil used in the mandrel process gives off a particular odor different from that oil used to just protect the piping from rust. Since this exhaust looks old it needs a visual inspection. Like I said the pipe needs to be the same size O.D. And most likley I.D. The whole way down the piping with the exception of the clamps that were used.
Using clamps lind defeats the purpose of madrel bends though. You have smooth corners from the bending and same sized diameters but now because of the clamps to connect the piping you now have a created turbulance in the exhaust and different shaped I.D. This is why with most preformance exhuasts it is best to WELD and not use exhuast clamps.... Mine is fully welded and or bolted with crush flanges.....
When using a crush bender divits or dimples will be created. This is caused by the bender not moving the piping down the line to be bent. The piping stays sationary and just as the names describes is the crushed to creat the bend. The piping is not stretched like the mandrel will do it is forced in a more blunt way to make the bend. This results in odd diameters and non conformaty throughout the piping. The dimples will also cause an amount of turbulance.... Think of it like a river moving over a rough rock bed. Where as with madrel because the piping is smoother and "stretched" to fit with no caves its more like a river moving over a soft clay area with no rapids....
Hope this helps....

EDIT- looking at the pipe is a pretty good way to see if its madnrel or not... BUT...the only sure fire way to tell is to measure the diameter of the piping in sections to check for consistancy...... This will also give you an idea of the quality of the bender... The really good benders will actually have variation on the OD but the ID will be the same all the way through the pipe.... Just and FYI....
