correct me if im wrong, but why would a CAI suck any water just b/c its raining? the filter should be sitting safely inside the bumper, well guarded from road debris and moisture. Unless you're doing swamp buggy racing in your prelude you should never have to worry about hydro lock.

If you go through a puddle it is a possibility it could get up in there. I have a short ram for that very reason.

Also a downside of CAI is that you have less low end power, BUT you have higher high end power.

you can't just get some, or a little, water in the CAI in order to hydrolock. The whole filter would have to be submerged. You drive in 12 inches of standiing water a lot?

Bypasses disrupt air flow to the point where the stock intake out performs it. I live in Seattle so water is more than just a possibility, it's a reality. So I use a V2 short ram.

You could go back to stock intake.

^you could go stock and buy my k&n drop in filter... used about 1 year :)... don't put the resonator back in and you will have about the same thing as a short ram, but it won't look as good.

the v2s are good.

I've had my CAI on for 2 yrs now (K&N filter). I've driven from las vegas to TX and back in rain, I've driven from las vegas to NY in winter and through Colorado and over the rockies through a snowstorm. I now live in rainy NC and still 0 hydrolocks, never had my CAI submerged (no BPV)

You know why it rains so much where i am? Cause I wash my car all the time lol. I swear it rains whenever I wash her, even when the weather man says it won't rain I prove him wrong by washing her.

that is def part of it... all that water and evaporation... here on the eastern side of the black mtns (mt mitchell 6684ft above sea level), we are in a rain shadow too... so lots of stuff coming in from the west gets broken up... sucks in the winter when it snows all up through the mtns, but not here in the foothills.

exactly. 12 inches of standing water is still a bit of an exaggeration, but for argument's sake... if you go through a pool of water that deep, you deserve the hydrolock. do not do the bypass valve. if you're really that scared of it, you got 2 options: 1. go with a sri, or 2. get injen's sri with the cae (cold air extension).

anyone remove some metal around the whole where the stock intake comes through so that the SRI has a bit more air available???
specifically air that is not straight from the engine bay... my intake is built with half a polished stainless CAI system and thus the filter points down right at the oval where the stock intake enters from the resonator, but I always wonder if it would be better if that hole was just a little larger

It won't make a measurable difference. It's about like having a hand fan to cool and entire gymnasium. Even if you constructed some kind of scoop to push air up the hole, it won't make a difference because it's still sucking to air from the top. That's why a stock intake is better than a sort ram, not to mention the aluminum piping gets way hotter than the plastic and rubber of the stock intake, thus making the air itself cooler, and the air going in the engine cooler.

Yea, it makes sense... I may have left mine if I had known that sooner. Don't you guys have a thread on the k&n/stock air box vs. SRI?
