91 Prelude

Hey guys I'm new to this forum! Hi! Here's what's up, I'm new with cars and I'm barely learning how to drive stick. I just got my prelude yesterday and I need help in understanding my prelude and cars in general basically lol. That's why I joined this forum =] But yea here's the problem, when I shift into 3rd or 4th gear it makes this weird noise. I was wondering how I could figure out what the problem is and how to fix it. Thank you so much! I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong place! And oh yea, here's my lude:

Hey, what's up! When I shift into third gear It sounds as if I'm trying to change gears without stepping on the clutch but I actually am stepping on the clutch. I'm stepping all the way in as far as the clutch pedal could go too.

have you had any issues of pressing the clutch and the wheels just dont seem to spin when you start releasing it? aka, does it feel like the clutch is slipping? Or, does the clutch feel ok but maybe you are feeling the problem (like grinding or trouble going into gear) in the shifter? We need to find out if the problem is in the clutch or the transmission. Have you checked the tranny fluid level?

To me it sounds like he's describing grinding when shifting...

Is it hard to get it into the gear when you hear the noise?

Could be a 'synchro' issue, need more details though

My feeling is that from what you said it is a syncro problem. You will need to take the gearbox apart and check the 3rd and 4th gear syncs.
I have the same problem with my lude but this one is in 5th. Until you solve it I can tell you how to drive it so you minimise your grinding. You can either shift very slowly and gently put it into gear (doesn't work at high revs or for the first 5 shifts) waiting for revs to drop, or you can double-clutch in these 2 gears.
You said you're new to stick so this is how you do it (sorry if I underestimate):
-you rev and give it a bit more acceleration before you shift (say 3000rpm)
-you push the clutch and let go of the gas
-now you put it into neutral and then let go of the clutch
-you are now rolling freely
-let the revs drop a little bit (2000rpm), clutch, put it into your new gear, give it gas and nicely drop the clutch.

Don't do it quickly at first and after practice you will shift a little slower then a normal shift with minimal clutch ride and in terms of confort level you won't feel the difference once you get the clutch-gas balance.

Hey thanks for the responses! Nah, the clutch isn't slipping. Do you have instructions on how to take apart the gearbox and do you guys think I can do it myself with my knowledge of cars? Which is none hahaha. But yea, thanks everyone! And oh yea, I was wondering if you guys know any articles online I could read up on so I can get at least for now a basic understanding of my car and understand the different parts and its functions. Thanks!

taking the gearbox apart is definately a more advanced project. requires patience and time more than anything so if you think it would be easier to get a quote from a mechanic, i recommend that. Also, check out salvage yards or even auto parts store just to get a price on a whole new tranny...could be cheaper.

No, dont tear apart your gearbox if you are new to cars.

What you can do, is download the repair manual in the 3rd gen resource guide(located in my sig) and read through it. You'll find a chapter dedicated to transmission. There you will also learn how to change your manual transmission fluid. Change the transmission fluid first, see if the grinding persists then get back to us

You know where your drop-down change holder is? it also doubles as the FUSE diagram.
Take a look at it and see the one that says, "Interior lights?" find that fuse and see if it is blown...

..when you turn on the lights, does your temperature controls light up or no? meaning the heater/A.C buttons etc.
