Shopping for a prelude, some basic questions

I'm shopping for a used car, and i'm pretty convinced the prelude is the car for me. I'm fairly set on the idea of a fifth generation prelude, but a fourth gen with a H22 is a possibility. I've done alot of research and the H22 equipped prelude has alot more power than many of the cars it competes with. I'm a small guy, so I fit in it just fine. I'd appreciate any help you could provide with my questions:

1. I test drove a prelude today. Had a stock photo on dealer's website, I get there and it's got a CF hood and a body kit in typical condition. Looked lowered, so bottom of kit had some damage. I drive it and it starts up and idles fine, runs good till I get to between 5000 and 6000 rpm. It ran pretty rough like it was struggling. Still pretty quick, but I drove a car that managed to barely put down over 100 HP to the ground before. I'm wondering if VTEC damage is possible. Is this a possibility? That car had alot of under hood issues and about 8 inches of water in the trunk as well as no carpet back there.

2. Do these car's not have a MAF between the intake filter and the intake manifold?

3. What's the weight on these vehicles?

4. I see some car's with immaculate engine bays and some with terribly dirty ones. Should I be concerned, or is it typical for these cars to have quite dirty engines after 50000 miles or so?

5. What kind of 0-60 and 1/4 mile times should I expect stock?

6. Is the auto tranny noticeably slower?

Thanks for your help.

I can't answer all those questions for you but the auto tranny is not only slower but has 5 less horsepower out the factory (99-01) and is a little slower (1st and 2nd). Stock, manual should be around 15sec 1/4 mile but that depends on the driver. My car has 90k but still has a really clean engine bay, so it all depends on how you take care of your car. The 4th gen is lighter than the 5th but the h22 in the 5th has more hp and tq than the 4th. I can't answer it all for you but I'm pretty sure there's more peopl on her e who know alot more than I do who can.

Curb Weight:
5th-2950
4th-2809

although Ive never been in an automatic prelude, but Ive heard from significant amount of people that it a huge difference in power and reliability(The manual being the more powerful and reliable)

I think you should try and find a manual you will not regret it

For the water in the trunk that is a very common problem for preludes and is a pretty simple fix (you have to look it up since I don't have such a problem)

the water in the trunk could be small issue like the tail light seals or it could be big like flooding. i say do a car fax before you go any further with lude. BTW the whole body kit and lowered thing already puts a bad picture in my head, look around and be patient bro, i waited about 3 months before i found my lude but i couldn't be happier

I have the slushbox version so I would just say it depends rather you wanna be lazy and cruise or you want speed and involvement. Car and driver tested the slushbox for around 7.8sec(I think.. still have the magazine somewhere) for 0-60mph back in the late 90's when the fifth gen first came out. I'd say in real life it'd be something like 8 seconds for a used 5g. With that said, the auto lude is not a bad car and is pretty fun to drive comparing to others...

Also, the SH which is really special with the ATTS and is manual only.

I guess I am going to keep trying to find a prelude; a manual one just to avoid the nightmares of an auto transmission I don't need. The only thing disappointing about the car is the torque numbers I guess, it just isnt quite as quick in the low end as I'd like. Other than that it's pretty nice. The shifter feels so weird compared to a rod actuated shifter, but is still pretty easy to shift.

Thanks for the explanation that the SH has the ATTS, i was baffled as to why the car felt like it had absolutely no traction.

Does anyone have dyno charts? I'd like to compare the powerband to my existing vehicle's engine. I appreciate all the help.

the car i test drove so far had aftermarket wheels and tires, and what felt like an aftermarket clutch, so it was very difficult to launch and spun on one wheel like a typical open diff.
