Looking for some extra power

So I have done some searching and have some specific questions reguarding turbos and installation on my 97 base 5 sp.

First of all let me state my objectives. Im not looking to peg any dynos, Im not interested in 1/4 mile times and I don't care what a dyno slip says about my car. I just want some more oomph. I drive all the time and go on 200 mile
day trips. Im looking for something reliable and not tinkering with all the time.

With that said I have been looking into the Turbonetics kit particularly because I can buy it through work. In this kit is there everything I need to bolt it up and run on a stock engine with out any kind of crazy engine management system or changing ECUs or OBD systems? I dont need to see how much boost I can make out of the system and if it runs within 90% of its potential and I have no worries of blowing it apart then great Ill roll with that. I have heard a lot of "the right way" to do things but sometimes its overkill and only applies to the extremes. Again not looking for that.

Can it be done to increase output by say 30-40% with no other mods. Also there is no dyno and no tuners around here so again can it be a bolt on item?

Any feedback is welcome and please keep my objectives in mind.

Regardless of whether you go turbo or super, you NEED to get it tuned if you want your engine to last!! That is an absolute must! Street or dyno tuning ranges from $2-500, mostly on the higher side of that.
TO BE RELIABLE, your going to need to switch to an OBD1 ECU which can be had from either phearable, xenocron, or other places for around $120. This is all "the right way" to do this, and is in no way overkill for what you wanna do, it is the CORRECT way to do it!!

Rule of thumb: if you can't afford a new engine, boosting isn't for you!

Okay thats pretty much what I needed to know. I know that they are a totally different breed that domestics but you see people toss a blower on an 05 Chev and its off and running. Not as good as it could be but never the less makes power. Thanks for the fast reply.

Not F/I related but say I got some mild cams and a VAFC. Would I see gains that would make it worth the money? 15% more power or so?

Cams and gears will prbly give you the reliable increase your are looking for. I would go more for hondata over VAFC though because of the tunability factor.

I would start with an aftermarket clutch & 12lb(dont go lower) flywheel.

Im really not interested in the Hondata. You still hve to convert to OBD1 correct? I have also thought of the lightened flywheel. Simple physics rather than cranking up the power. With a mild cam and gears and intake the Apexi Neo should be sufficient A/F adjustment right?

The Neo does as well, just a newer platform and I can get a sweet deal on them
