Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

**New Update post on 5/14/12**

Ok, I should have posted up something about this a while ago when I got started, but *insert excuses*. I have a 94 with a JDM H22a. I purchased a used Jackson Racing Supercharger in hopes that we could make it fit. Well it's been about a week and we got the bugger to fit, and she'll be tuned on a p28 with an S300(Hondata) tonight.

There were some issues that I anticipated and some that I didn't.
-It is definitely a tight fit (no that's what she said jokes)
-The standard bracket for the main pulley just did not work. We had to use a modified adaptor.
-The kit comes with an adaptor to relocate the power steering pump. That does not fit the 4th gen power steering pump at all. (Power steering = gone)
-Cruise control = gone
-The belt on the large set of pulleys did not clear the strut tower or a large bolt a little further down. We tried to grind the strut tower and it wasn't enough. It had to be hammered in. The bolt was just replaced.
-My AEM intake did not fit and had to be cut on the upper part near the throttle body to line up.
The 4th gen alternator has 5 ribs and the 5th gen has 6. The supercharger was designed for the 5th gen so the larger belt is 6PK1930. Once we started it up after attaching everything, that extra rib was ripped off. It's still holding and I haven't taken it off yet. However, I do plan to get a 5th gen pulley or alternator so that my belt is complete. Kinda important, I think.

I'm hoping for a good night tonight when I leave work. Wish me luck. I'll get some pics uploaded and maybe a dyno video. I don't expect a lot of power out of the supercharger. Not like a turbo obviously, but I think it's going to fun. It's my daily and needed to keep A/C, my system and everything else I could hold on to. Power steering and cruise control...meh.

***Update***
It didn't go well yesterday. I got to the shop after work and there was a 2nd gen GS300 strapped up. They spent a good 2 hours getting it tuned to 807whp and some ridiculous torque figure. The 2JZGTE is a wonderful piece of machinery. Anyhow, it was too late for them to start tuning mine and it will have to be done today. I kinda didn't want my little car to get up after seeing that spectacle.

More to follow. As has been mentioned before...there is a very good reason there are few supercharged 4th gens compared to 5th gens. I'm earning this one.

That is quite ambitious, sir. Good luck to you. I'll make sure to post up the results as soon as I get it all done.

Absolutely. I hope it doesn't get dyno'd today while I'm at work. I went in Saturday morning and spent the entire day at the shop. We had to take the entire kit off to reach the gasket underneath. It was leaking bad and wouldn't hold any boost and car was idling high. We called around for a new gasket and after getting an ETA of 1 week, decided to make a new one.

Once that was finished, we spent the remainder of the day putting everything back on. It was good to go, started and boosted, but our tuner was nowhere to be found. He had to leave, so it should be tuned today on the S300. I told him to make sure someone records it if I'm not there. We'll see. If not I may have to make him put it back up there just so I can get a video.

Up next...Tuesday morning update.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

Ok...I don't know if I even want to drive this thing to work. I'm going to end up stranded. This thing has gone through both belts already. I'm going to have to carry spare belts and tools with me at all times. It's probably just because the belts were old. Hopefully this doesn't become a recurring issue. I know I need to get some Goodyear Gatorback belts but had to go local so I'm not waiting even longer.

While it was on the dyno yesterday, the smaller belt snapped at about 7psi and rocketed to the ceiling of the shop. Good thing is, there is no boost leak and the vacuum that was created has also been fixed. Tuning was going well on the low end, but as soon as he went for a "power pull" the belt said bye bye. Today is a new day. My patience should pay off and prevent me from damaging the car though. If you're going FI, gotta do it right.

See ya tomorrow.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

None of the pulley's wobble when they spin right?

Lets hope it was just due to old belts.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

Hmm...I haven't noticed any of the pulleys wobbling. We have had to install and remove it so many times that I guess it would not surprise me if that happened though. I will have to check for that again tonight. Thanks for the insight.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

Yeah, I need to do a couple things first and will go for the 9lb pulley in a few months. I need to get a 5th gen alternator pulley so I can run the 6 rib belt instead of 5 on the large pulley. I also need to upgrade to a Walbro fuel pump. Neither of these stopped me so far, but I want to do it right...especially if I'm going to 9psi. I could get more hp out of it if I went with aftermarket exhaust, but I like it with the stock exhaust. Nice sleeper...kinda.

O god please get a bigger fuel pump ASAP!!!

Forcing more air into the engine without supplying enough fuel due to lack-of fuel system upgrades is the easiest way to run lean and blow your shiit up!!

Nice numbers BTW.

Nice numbers BTW.
I asked my tuner and he said that my stock pump would supply the correct amount of fuel, but would just be working harder to do so. Eventually causing the pump to go out quickly. I thought I had a couple weeks before I would get the Walbro. This however, is a frightening scenario. I guess I need to get on that asap. Now I'm afraid to drive it.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

They're only like $95 shipped. That's cheap insurance isn't it?

But I mean since you are tuned, I'm assuming your tuner was watching your IDC's and keeping them at a safe limit. I'm VERY surprised he said the stock pump was good for 240whp.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

Ok, during the tuning process a week ago, one of the issues I had a was a bad radiator cap. I bought on at autozone, but it didn't look exactly the same. I needed one, so I took it. Anyhow, while tuning, the stock thermostat told me that the car was overheating. It was all the way to the red. We shut off the car for all of 60 seconds. Turned it back on and it was right back in the middle.

We tested the Hondata S300 and lowered the temperature parameters. Let the car run for a while and when it got up to 206 F' the check engine light came on just like it should have. The hondata was working. Is it possible that the OEM thermostat is set much lower, going bad, or do I really need to figure out how to cool this thing better?

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

for some reason my 92-96 prelude aftermarket radiator would not work with the autozone radiator cap for the 92-96 prelude. i found that the 92-95 eg civic radiator cap fits perfect and never leaked on me. not saying its your problem but this is something i had a problem with as well. it also was not a custom half sized civic radiator which i have now. but previously it was the factory prelude radiator, then lost the cap so had to buy a new one and only the civic radiator cap would work?.... also the same thing hapened to me it would over heat, id turn off the car turn it right back on, and itd be half way i cant remember what it was bc ive had terriable cooling expirences but it was either
a loose ground (any can do it but mine was the one coming from the battery to the radiator support, or the thermostat) hope i helped.

Much appreciated. I will run by the parts store and see if I can get that cap you recommended. I hope it's just a loose ground or the cap. Trying to externally cool a supercharger does not make for a fun time. I would assume that if Hondata is watching the temp in the engine, and responding with the overheating code, that I would be safe even if the in car oem thermostat is reading high. Especially, if like we both experienced, it's back to normal when the car is turned off and back.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

well man i put in the low temp mishimoto thermostat and along with the half size mishimoto civic radiator and now my car hardly ever sees the half way mark (only in city driving does it see half way) the rest its consistantly at the quarter mark. if you want to try it id reccomend it man the one specified to fit preludes is only for the h23 and f22 they do not make one specifically labeled for the h22; however the s2000 thermostat is literally the same one as a h22 thermostat so i bought that one and put the oem honda gasket on and it sat in there absolutly perfect as if it was bought from honda for the h22. this could be an ok route to go as well man

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

Sounds like a good idea. I was looking at the Mishimoto radiotors and didn't know if this would work. I heard issues of the fan shrouds not fitting. I still needed to research that some more. However, I can just mimic your setup.

So, I have before me, the Mishimoto half size Civic aluminum radiator

The s2000 racing thermostat
Honda S2000 Racing Thermostat, 2000-2009, by Mishimoto

...and I'm assuming I need the Civicfan shroud as well?

Now, one other question. Is it a good idea to at least get the low temp thermostat with the stock radiator in the meantime? I wasn't prepared to drop $500 for the radiator and fans today, but think that the additional coolant at a lower temp would be great until I can do that.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

i got my radiator for dirt cheap with some open box special deal, you really dont need the shroud its mainly for looks and i got the 20 dollar ebay special fan man... its quiet, it cuts, on when needs to, and it cools it down pretty dang quick. just figure out what color you want (they have blue, black, and red) of coarse thats simply optional, but it also comes with special zip ties that go through the radiator very very simple proccess wire the 2 wires up from the fan to the factory harness and your done i did it in about 30 minutes all together from popping the hood to bleeding the system. the only thing that took some time was to get the radiator stay to make the radiator sit flush with the radiator support. that is where the only "customizing" should take place. also with the factory front subframe you cannot use the factory prelud elower radiator hose; however you'll need the civic lower radiator hose (which is 15 dollars from autozone) if you have the traction bar the prelude lower hose will fit just fine. and you'll also need to trim the radiator hose to fit as good as possible. theres a write up for this in the DIY engine section thoe with pictures

yezzir, not a problem i noticed the oem thermostat gasket sits better in the thermostat housing of the motor than the mishi one did so i deffinitly reccomend re-using the oem one if it wasn't leaking

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

Update time:

It's time to build the engine a little and increase the boost. I have purchased most of the parts, and work commences....well, as we speak. The purpose of this is to build the block outside of my currently running H22a at 6psi. Once it's built we can drop it in the new block and I'll have my spare stock block lying around...just in case. I'll let you know how it goes.

-H23 sleeved block + my H22A head = Frankenstein
-Forged rod & pistons
-Walbro 255 fuel pump
-New gaskets and seals
-New water pump
-New oil pump
-New timing belt
-Remove balancer
-Accord crank pulley (9psi)
-Mishimito full radiator
-Spal radiator fan
-Mishimoto low temp racing thermostat for the winter/thermostat removed during the summer
-Retune on Dyno/S300 after we get it all in there.

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

A little new info today.

I've been to the shop several times over the past few weeks. After the hiccup with the car overheating, I purchased:
-Mishimoto full size radiator
-Mishimoto racing thermostat
-Spal Radiator fan

I also installed the Walbro 255 that I should have done in the first place along with the Accord crank pulley(9psi). Well, after getting everything setup it was time to tune. Car was running well, cool and sounded good. After 3 pulls...246hp?!

I was already at 240. All readings say that I'm not getting anymore than 6psi. So that would make sense. The car is running exactly the same amount of boost as before. How could that be with the 98-02 4cyl Accord crank pulley installed in place of my old 4th gen crank pulley?

I hope I'm not missing something concerning the install, but I always assumed that the Accord crank pulley was to be installed in place of my old crank pulley. Seemed pretty straightforward to me. Well, we questioned whether or not I got the correct pulley and it has been confrimed that the pulley is the right one.

My only guess at this point is...belt slippage? Unfortunately, my old gatorback belt was ripped so I went with the original belt that came with the supercharger. I have already ordered another large gatorback and have a small one sitting in the garage. I will wait and install them both at the same time then try again. Hopefully, this is all it was. I would have expected to see the boost go up higher and drop down though. Not just stay at 6 and hold like before. This is what worries me and makes me 2nd guess the slippage.

Let me know if you guys have any other ideas.
*sigh*

re: Supercharged 4th Gen Prelude

Just to confirm, did compare the pulley's face to face/side by side to see if they're the same/different diameters?

Yeah, before putting the new one on we compared them. The Accord pulley is definitely bigger.
