Was about to trade it off when...

I went and sat in my car for a while tonight and got to thinking about all the fun i've had in the lude and how much potential i might have with a g23vtec-t. I got on the laptop and actually ran the numbers instead of guessing. I originally guessed at around 9.5:1 from where i milled the head, with everything in stock form you'll see about 8.69:1 comp ratio, after I ran the numbers it seems I have 9.01:1. Really right about where I wanted it. i'm gonna cut the flange off the dc's and weld a t3 flange to it, makin a dc turbo manifold. Its time to get this thing going. gonna have my cuz do some welding so i'll have all solid engine mounts, gonna be boosting this month as long as my new job works out tomorrow. Not a good comparison, but how hard is it to get in the 300 hp range with a boosted h23vtec on 9:1 compression?

It won't be too tough to hit 300 horse with that motor, what turbo you planning on running?

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

crank hp or whp??

i had 250whp,275wtq on a BONE stock F22 @ 10psi. which is over 300hp/tq to the crank.

just do a bit more research to which size turbo will fit your needs perfectly, and 300 will be easy-peasy.

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

well the turbo's gonna be sitting to low to mod the dc's for turbo, but i'm gonna figure it out. I've got a garret with 60 ar compressor / 67 ar turbine. four bolt flange. oil cooled, no water cooling. came from a turbo thunderbird. has a built in wastegate, feels pretty stout. 300whp is what im after.

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

now just find the compressor map for that turbo, do the math, plot the points, and see if they fall within the efficiency range of the map. if it does you'll be a golden pony-boy.

*edit* i was also contemplating hacking up a kamikazi 4-1 header that i got for free, and welding a t3 flange onto it, til i saw how thin the metal of the runners are. if you still wanna go this route, make sure you also weld in plenty of bracing to the head flange, or anywhere else that can take the weight, instead of it hanging entirely off the header.
also, as long as the oil return line isn't kinked, is as smooth as possible, and does NOT flow up-hill, or even level, it doesn't matter how low it sits (well, as long as its not hanging beneath the cross-members. granted, if it WAS sitting this low, the return line would HAVE to run uphill hahaha). i would imagine a DIY hacked/header manifold would place the turbo very close to where a full ram-horn mani would place it.

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

yeah im lazy. i know i shouldnt just slap any turbo on here, but cant find a model number on this thing anywhere, but its the super 60 from a tbird. should be good for what i'm after. been searching trying to find some good info. and yeah my hacked header would put the turbo right on top of the crossmember. might still work. also just found its a 63 ar turbine rather than a 67.

Why are you searching to find good info when he gave it to you? You can't be lazy with research!

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

yeah, it was good info, a lot to try and process. i read all three turbo tech articles. I did spend part of the evening figuring just how to make it work using the dc headers, and i have a good plan. gonna put the turbo in the front bumper cover, make a new y to go from the flange and bend under the crossmember where its at its highest point. then bring it in front of the radiator up into the bumper cover to the turbo, dumping the exhaust through a 3 inch pipe coming out the bottom passenger side in front of the tire. The placement i have in mind will allow me to use the headers and have the turbo in a spot where the oil return will gravity drain to the oil pan, also will air cool the turbo when vehicle is at speed. gonna make a homemade resistor box and run 2 sets of injectors which will be at 6 ohms before the resistor box, aiming for 12 ohms after. I have a spare rail and injectors, would be a cheap way to double the fuel delivery without spending $300+. then a tune for 580cc injectors should do the trick since that will essentially be what i'll have 290x2=580. What do ya'll think? am i crazy as I seem?
This much fuel would support 295 hp on a turbo engine according to Vritual Engine Calc.

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

Oh. No.

Fantastic 4 quote:
"Time for your lesson - Chem 101. What happens when you rapidly cool hot metal?"

Don't put your turbo there, you will melt the bumper and what ever else is there, aside the cold water. You're gonna have to put the fuel through the manifold (no way to monitor or meter the correct delivery-bad, and if one fuel pump goes, lean city!) or on the other side of the block and make direct injection ports (bad)
Just get the bigger injectors. The right thing to do is get an oil cooler with a reservoir and electric fan dedicated to cooling the oil. Air won't touch the temps. Turbo isn't something to cut corners. You could get an adapter at the down pipe hookup turbo then a 3" pipe to cat.

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

I've been trying to get it monuted in a decent spot all day, starting to wish for a smaller turbo, theres no room, or I'll have to have some wicked bends going on, or an electric oil pump just about anywhere i try and put it, so its time to do the right thing and buy a manifold or weld one together from my factory header, still gonna use the extra injectors and rail to save some cash. Why use 2 fuel pumps? I have a t in my fuel line already from when i used to have nitrous. if anyone has a wet kit i'll trade you my turbo for it.

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

Hey, so how's it working out? Why would you need so much fuel? I figure the injectors are 290's and there is always room. Some guys say they run 290's w/ 8psi boost and hold their A/F. But, how do you know you are really not just spraying fuel against a closed intake valve and it just pours into the cylinder when it opens next time? That would put your A/F right where you want it, but only in the exhaust, not in the cylinder. I did the math and seems like a moderate boost setup only requires 370's. 450's are really nice (aren't they from turbo Talons?), and you should be able to find some for like 100$. How are you going to control your fuel? AEM piggy back?

Re: Was about to trade it off when...

Your better off just buying a cast manifold for that turbo. The 450's are easy to find they come in turbo eclipse and talons
