Boostin' my 98 sh

sup guys well i know what i need as in part wise but i need some help on few parts for my turbo set up. i'm thinking on buying part by part til i get all of them, then it's gonna be installed. the reason is if i don't buy part now i won't ever buy it at all lol, so if i start it im gonna want to finish it. weird huh? the car i want to boost is my dd so i want it to be compatible with that. I don't really care about making like 300hp etc, i just want to boost it enough on stock h22a4 with 130k miles so it doesn't blow up and shiit. can i get some help on this? Hopefully some one can help me and tell me what is a good setup for my car, i can start my shopping list. Im planning to just have a reliable turbo set up.
i already know what turbo ima use so pretty much just want to know the rest from here. Cheap and reliable is what im looking for, because im not planning to race/drag but maybe a few little pulls for funs and what not.

(and don't flame me yo' i been learning on bout turbo for few months now and i still search and learn more about it every day)

even with mild boost your going to ruin the reliablity of this car . most of the h22s with 130 k are already burning a little oil throw boost at them and it dosnt take long to finish them off . i would at least have the head cleaned up new valve seals and a decent set of rod and pistons ( lower compression 20 over to clean up the bore one size up pistons ) in the long run you will save yourself some headache . oh yeah new oil pump too ( i learned this the hard way ) . if your planning on low boost ( 7 to 10 lbs ) you can go with a small turbo with just about non existent lag . dont cheap out and buy ebay piping kit either you will end up with a piece meal piping set up 2 or 3 more couplings than needed ( more pipes to blow apart under boost ) t bolts and rolled pipe are always a good idea and save you alot of headache too .

Re: Boostin' my 98 sh

Do a compression and leakdown test first to see how healthy your motor is. If the numbers come out good, u may be able to get away with boosting it on about 6-7 pounds(depending on the turbo). What kinda turbo u gonna run? T3/T4?

Re: Boostin' my 98 sh

inspect ur car man, like he said compression/leakdown, dont be stupid and just slap on a turbo, your gonna wind up paying for a new motor, change oils, flush ur system, make sure ur motor can handle any more power, change seals , Clutch? if its stick, i dont see the point for a turbo if u dont wanna have a monster car, if u just want a faster car just build ur motor, different story if its for looks but w.e , use a garret turbo not to expensive, the most ur motor can handle with a stock block/head is about 8 lbs, and thats pushing it i would run about 6 to be safe

Re: Boostin' my 98 sh

i'm doing a leak down and comp test on tuesday so if its all good then yea, pretty sure it is but if it ain't i'll post on here. but yea i'm trying to run 6-8 max to be safe but now im not sure what turbocharger i should get. i keep hearing t3/t4 hybrids is the way to go since its more common and what not but do i need one that big if im only trying to run about 6? or can i get the t3/t4 and still run 6? thats the only thing confusing me atm. Im learning everything bout turbos and what not but i just don't get what tc i need to run 6-8

Re: Boostin' my 98 sh

t3/t4 is the family of turbo's. there are so many different sizes and combo's of t3/t4's that its mind-boggling.

Re: Boostin' my 98 sh

I have an SH and I ran a turbo on a stock motor. It was tuned to 6 psi, honestly, I hardly felt a difference in the power. Torque was still ridiculously low, but I did plan on building my motor. At the time I was taking apart the engine, I notice my water pump did have a crack in it. So, although I had a pretty solid tune, things still went sideways and could of been worst.

Re: Boostin' my 98 sh

Dude best thing you can do is go to your tuner and talk to him about what you want to do, what your goals are, what kind of budget you have and so on. Ask him what he likes to tune with and don't cheap out. If you cheap out you will end up paying in the end Talk to a tuner who does this shiz all the time. Like Element said get a small turbo that will spool fast and have virtually no lag. Garrett, Turbonetics and Precision are all reputable.

Have yourself a look at this too if you haven't already:
Basic | Turbobygarrett

Good luck and post up your progress!
