wondering if its a good idea to turbo it

Hello i am really considering installing a turbo kit on my 97 lude. my real concerns are if its to massive of a job. my dad is a heavy duty mechanic and i am pretty mechanically inclined , we just installed my new clutch kit last month and it seemed like a big job but really we just powered through it. I am really not looking for any drag type boost...just want a fair decent amount of more horses i heard stock ludes can really only run 7psi boost...which might give it 75-100 more horse which i would love and be completly content with. i was looking at ebay motors and found some kits on there for 800-1000 canadian and im wondering if thats a good price or a bad one...im really only looking to throw 2 grand tops on this project. any help or advice would be greatly apreciated thx guys

Re: wondering if its a good idea to turbo it

3k you could do a proper job on it
de-compression pistons, etc etc

that way you could run far more bar
since you and your pop are mechanics, your only paying for parts which for 3k, youd get a lot

I think you can handle the job. The only thing I am leery of is ebay turbos.

Re: wondering if its a good idea to turbo it

yea thats what im scared of getting some crap knock of turbo kit on ebay for cheap and it just being a waste but really i live in canada and i could only race this sucker 7 months of the year and on top of that im only doing it so i have a little bit more confidence to race...got beat by this audi the other day and it made me hate my lil 4 banger haha...but the reason i bought my lude...not only because of its sexiness but because hondas are great tuner cars...so i thought maybe i should take the plunge

Re: wondering if its a good idea to turbo it

Just a heads up, that race was at a track. ;-) They don't condone street racing here.

If you are going to boost on stock, make sure your engine is in good shape. 7psi on a lower volume turbo is going to be different than 7 psi on a larger turbo. some basic stuff you would need to also consider along with the kit.

First off, something will go wrong. This may be something small, or a something big, be prepared fot it.

Second, you will need a new ecu, since the one that you have is not chippable to be tuned.

Tuning, if you have no experience doing this, you want to get this done by a professional. This can get expensive quick.

Any of the turbo experts, please add / correct me where I am wrong.

Where abouts in Canadia are you?

Re: wondering if its a good idea to turbo it

of course it was at a track!!!.... well i talked to my pa today and he seems to know a fair amount about turbo. I guess as a heavy duty mechanic every bus he works on has a turbo charger on them, there is prob mass differences between the two...but im guessing some will cross over. and im in edmonton

Re: wondering if its a good idea to turbo it

just so u know never expect things to go right the first time. but the best advice i can give you....DONT CHEAP OUT ON PARTS.

hell just the other day i pulled into the shop to get tuned and my car **** out on me b.c of one cracked injector O ring. a simple 50cent part could have really ****ed my motor up. i should have replaced it when changing injectors.

oh yeah and theres no such thing as a budget when turboing a car. u really dont want to know how much i have spend on mine.
