can i run boost with obd2?

i'm been doing quite a bit of searching on here but i havent found a specific answer to my question.

i bought a 97 prelude that is turbo'd. i have to redo the whole motor, my question is once it's done, can i have it tuned on obd2 instead of doing the swap to obd1? i don't want to have problems with geting it inspected. i have a vafc2 if that helps at all?

i will be running no more then 8psi out of a t3 (not sure what turbo it is exactly, havent looked at it since i bought it) if that's important info to answer my question

Re: can i run boost with obd2?

Probably not man, mainly because of the fact that OBDII is considered a "smart ECU" and will change back the tune that you just got for your turbo set up. OBDI conversion is the way to go, as far as I've read.

Re: can i run boost with obd2?

also here in jersey the 1996 and up cars get hooked up to the obd2 computer for inspection.... my car is a 97, so what would happen exactly if i converted to obd1.....

is there any other way to do it?

That sucks having to worry about that when you're just trying to be boosted.

Re: can i run boost with obd2?

well here's the thing. i have my inspection license from when i used to work at a shop, but now i cant use it because i dont work in a garage anymore.

with obd1 it's cake because all it gets is a probe in the tailpipe to test emission levels. if the car doesnt pass, you can switch it with another one because the inspection machine has no idea.

with obd2 however, you hook the machine up to the obd2 plug and it reads the vin number from the ecu and compares it to the one on the registration of the car, so if you were to switch the car for another one, it would read 2 different vins and raise a red flag. i don't remember what the procedure is for a 96' and up car if it's obd1, i;m sure theres some type of exception but i dont know what it is.

i live in teaneck, nj.

Re: can i run boost with obd2?

coming from new mexico....
i have a 98 civic that the obd2 test port reads "no exchange" because of a greddy piggyback controller
i told dude that the car blew an ecu and the shop repaired it and its been this way ever seance, or what ever line of b.s. you can spool up and spit out. he is then forced to sniff it but can only give a one year pass no matter how clean it is.
what they will get you on is a cel light. if you have one you need to find a way to make it go away.

Re: can i run boost with obd2?

depending on the state you live in, any car 96 or newer is subject to an obdII test. piggy back or stand alone engine management will cause you to NOT pass inspection. Find out your local laws before taking this any farther. My car has been sitting for 3 years. lol
