Tapping Oil Pan

Hey,
I'm currently waiting on my manifold to be made, yet I have everything else installed and ready to go. I'm asking for some help with tapping the oil pan since the pan's walls are so thin. If anybody could provide pics of how they did it, that'd be great. The fitting I currently have for the pan is 1/2" NPT. Thanks in advance!!

How do you plan to get the fitting to stay in? I'm curious about that...

i bought a nut with the same thread as my fitting to go on the inside of the pan.
ontop of that, i'll prolly JBweld the outside (dont knock it, PLENTY of people have had it work successfully) or weld it regularly (if there's a way to weld brass to.... steel??)

take it to a someone who does welding work thats what i did and if i was able to find someone in my area who does that then u should be able to too. it is safer then jb weld. make sure u tap it high enough that it doesnt prevent the oil return that would be bad twoel is almost too low i would say. i think i had mine tapped about an 1/8 higher.

you think mine is too low??

since that hole is only like 1/2" and i need around a 3/4" hole, you think i'll be good if i drill the 3/4 off-center so that the bottom of both holes are the same? (which would essentially mean the center of the hole will be higher than the smaller hole)

?

no i would not do that. that would lead to all sorts of problems. try it first pore like 4 quarts of water in it and see where the waterline is then if it is off have the hole welded. i would also not go with jb weld ya lots of people use it and it has worked but look around see if there is anyone in ur area who welds they will be able to weld it in. it cost me like 20 bucks no reason to cheap out if u have an oil leak that would really suck

why would u put oil in a clean oil pan if on an off chance it might need to be redrilled then u have to clean the pan out for a second time, i realize water is not as thick as oil but it will at least give an indication of the level

as long as the water doesn't sit in the pan for months/years on end, i see no harm with that method.

it'll be filled with water for what, 5 minutes? then just clean it all up with a towel

the ur good to go cause ur going to have less oil in there then the 4 to 4.5 quarts that it can hold since most of the oil will be in the engine and the turbo. close though, make sure though not to put in more then 4 quarts though, that should give u enough room for acceleration and cornering since the oil will move around.

New here, finally found this thread. This is probly my next step, I have a 5th gen, but are you guys using your OEM oil pans when tapping, or do we have to get an aftermarket pan?

Re: Tapping Oil Pan

Man three year old thread but i have a question.. do you HAVE to tap into the oil pain in order to run the oil feed lines to the turbo? Or is there another way to get oil to it?

Re: Tapping Oil Pan

Oil feed lines don't go to the oil pan, the drain lines do.

And no, there's nowhere else to drain to.
