What runs a turbo? (read this...need this answered ASAP)

Ok....now correct me if I'm wrong, but in a nutshell

The exhaust exiting the engine turns the turbo, which compresses air, sends it threw the intercooler, then into the intake?
That's what I've come up with after a year of reasearch...

However, I'm in OTC (college here), for automotive technology, and my instructor, (ASE Master Tech), told me the other day that turbos run off heat, and not exhaust flow... I didn't want too call him out without consulting you guys first lol.
Because if they ran on heat, they wouldn't vary with engine rpm...

Am I right? or is he?

Thanks,
Marshall

That's not all i've learned, but that's waht I had come up with as a back bone of the workings of a turbo system

Ok... I guess everyone forgets... I actually know quite a bit about this stuff

However, since Chip (teacher), is a master tech, there might be some weird thing that would make what he was saying correct, since I'm only half way threw my program, I thought someone might have more knowledge than me.

Re: What runs a turbo? (read this...need this answered ASAP)

Turbos, like a jet engine, work off the expansion of hot gases working against a turbine face to create rotational force. This in turn rotates a shaft which has a compressor mounted to it. The compressor draws in air and, due to the shape of it's housing, compresses( see how the name corresponds with the function) the air. If a turbo worked off the movement or flow of exhaust gases through the exhaust it really wouldn't be worth while.

dude i can't believe you call Bustr out like that. considering you say you don't know anything about turbos, and he's actually built engines for ROTM owners, i think he is prob. one of the only guys who should say anything. IF this guy is wasting his money and his teacher actually doesnt know much, someone should say something.

and im sick of people thinking PZ is the new BING! go search for your own stuff first! and maybe tell people that you did before you post anything. bc all your going to get are normal responses that youre wasting everyone's time to go search the internet first and see what you come up with.

Let's thank the cynics of PZ for closing this thread.

My apologies to the thread starter, there are only a few altruistic humans left on the internetz.
