Need some 240sx/ turbo help?

Well my boss recently repoed someones car because they refused to pay for work done. Now he's willling to give it to me for virtually free but I have some questions.

The car has a motor swap. Here are the details. see if they make sense:
its a 1990 240 Sx with the following engine swap

Twin Cam
16 Valve
SR20 DET

Turbo: T25G

Picture of the motor:

I dont know how much you can see and if I need to go get a model/ part number or any close ups let me know.

Now shouldnt there be a boost controller inside? Possibly the guy took it out with his stereo but im not sure. If he did what controller should be purchased to replace it?

Re: Need some 240sx/ turbo help?

my buddy has this exactttt car, except rattle-canned desert camo

looks like your missing a BOV too.

you don't need a boost controller if you wanna stay at how much boots the wastegate is putting out. its only if you wanna start turning up the boots that you need a controller, and from what i hear, they can handle a decent amount on the stock t25. my buddy was pushing 16/18 the max i remember.

figured i'd move this to F/I too.

Re: Need some 240sx/ turbo help?

Neck is right. He has more experience with boots (specifically, turbos), so I'll let him correct me, but if it's a mechanical boost controller, aren't there different springs that you can use to set the amount of boost you want to run?

Re: Need some 240sx/ turbo help?

16/18 is on the verg of hot air... but yeah blow off valve. make sure the wastegate is wired up correct... and vacuum lines are all hooked up or it will run like ****

also remove that big ass unessesary pcv box on the driver side of the valve cover and put a catch in there.. you will want that thing to breath

put pick that **** up

i think stock boost is 8psi on those motor.... they can handle 15 daily easy but u will need a good tune....

Runs like a charm. It really needs nothing but a stereo and rims. Fresh paint, motor, brakes. suspension could use a bit of work but im not complaining.

Thanks man. I'll want to clean a bunch of **** out of that bay. Up top its pretty cramped but all in all really nice motor to work on. Ive never been a motor guy so I figured this is a good starting point

there's only different springs that you put in EXTERNAL wastegates to determine the minimum boots you wanna run, then you can turn up the boots with a controller. IIRC you can safely run twice the wastegate size. but you don't put the spring in the boots controller.

but since t25's are internally gated you can't swap out springs, you turn the adjustment rod to increase/decrease the boots.

Ahhh...guess I should've said "mechanically controlled boots" then? lol And I love in the midst of serious conversation how we still call it boots. Wtf.

Re: Need some 240sx/ turbo help?

Alright well yesterday I finally got the long awaited test drive. One that consisted of more than just moving the car in and out of the shop :p. It felt awesome. I couldt quite put my foot into it since the engine still needs some parts. All in all still a very fun car though. Now see's as this will become a moderate track car lets talk turbos.

Im thinking along the lines of a T28. Now I dont know alot about turbos. Ill be honest there. Ive spent the last week reading hours on end trying to figure these things out. I know all the principals and basic design but they are very complex units depending on what they are being used for.

Im looking to eventually go about 350-400 hp. I dont want anymore becuase it will still be used on the streets and around here the streets are not to tuner freindly. What would you guys suggest for a turbo. Any reasons etc.

What I want it for:

Light drag use
Casual drift
Mostly street use
Quicker spool that can handle about 400 hp.

ive done plenty of research on 240sxforum.com and made a few posts there on different setup ups, but I figured id ask you guys too. Most guys on here are very knowledgable and the ones that have gone turbo really know the ins and outs of it all.

The 400hp goal is simply for a competition. American muscle (dad) vs Import (Me). He's dropping in a new 427 into a 1968 camaro but wont let me in on the rest. This is a car thats half mine and I just got the boot. So even though id be very happy with 300hp its just the fact I need to have not just a win but a convincing one

Re: Need some 240sx/ turbo help?

trust me with 300hp and the right turbo it will be fast... and 400 is getting a little much for a stock sr20... 350 is not pushin it too bad.

and if ur dad decides to put even a 150 shot in it... 400 wont be enough... lol and ur gonna need drag slicks regardless to have a chance b.c u will just spin down the track

a very good point. I dont really have money to start building the motor yet. 16 and car payments FTL. but hey its worth it. Okay 300 sounds like a fair and reasonable goal. Now I just need to decide on my final setup. I know my dadd wont be putting any shot in it. He is against it completely. Just the 427 crate engine is enough to worry me.

Thanks for all the help dude. I get all these ideas running in my head and want to make it all happen. Im a body guy so engines leave me thinking and asking questions. Ive been doing alot reading and trying to learn but I think the best way is to actually work on a car hence I want to buy the 240.

Re: Need some 240sx/ turbo help?

300 is a very easy and reliable goal.... ugrade the turbo and injectors then get a tune and u will be set.

finding the perfect turbo is the key tho
