Icon5 Turbo charged H23 - questions....

Hi,

I'm new here so i hope this is the correct section.

Currently i'm looking to buy a replacement for my current Honda.
And i found a 1994 2.3L Turbo charged with 125.500 on the clock.
The asking price is with in budget and the owner claims it made 270Hp on a dyno, (sounds nice)

Now i'm really considering this car but i have some concerns about the reliability.

How well do H23's handle a turbo setup?? (11PSI)
The car has a XSPower T3/T4 turbo with a large intercooler (don't know the make)
Custom made exhaust system and a light weight flywheel, new clutch and high pressure fuel pump and koni suspension upgrades and a brake upgrade.

I'm going to need it as a daily driver.
What kind of problems could i encounter?
(personally i'm concerned about the clutch wear and tire wear with all that extra power)

Thanks,

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

just keep in mind you don't have to make 11 pounds of boost every time u drive. The gas pedal controls the amount of power being put out. You can probably pass people in traffic at 1/2 throttle.

The turbo i'd be a lil weary about, because that particular company isn't known for quality turbos. Sounds almost like it'd be a turbo kit u could find on ebay.

The motor can handle whats going on, but i'd at least test drive it first, and if you can, do a compression test and find out the condition of the piston rings.

Just also keep in mind, its gonna be a little more maintanence for the car, and oil changes are SUPER important, and it'll use more gas, and you probably won't be using stock spec'd spark plugs

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

in most cases a turbo charged engine gets better gas mileage at part throttle, because it makes its power band more efficient and usable, as opposed to revving out to 5k rpms to get moving and keep up with traffic.

At full throttle, you can probably watch the bars of gas on the dash disappear as you rip thru 2 or 3 gears. For every 3 gears of racing in my car, its about 1 bar off the gas gauge.
Find out more info on the car.

Its most likely got a walboro 255lph fuel pump. I say 'most likely' because its an ebay/SSautochrome turbo. And that particular fuel pump is less than $100 shipped pretty much everywhere online.

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

Yeah the advert says it's got a walboro 255lph fuel pump.
it does look like a nice car overall but does have some parts that need replacement guy says that those come with the sale so i that will be a big negotiation point.

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

"turbo" and "daily driver" should only be used in the same sentence when a good QUALITY turbo kit has been used, not the ebay brand thats on that particular car.

XSpower is known to be the most unreliable company out there, with their manifolds cracking, turbo's breaking, wastegates creeping, etc. its pretty much a craps shoot as to whether or not it's gonna break, and if you feel like taking that gamble on your daily driver.... go for it.

personally, i'd never, ever, EVER buy a boosted car that wasn't turbo'd stock, cuz you have no idea what/if any corners have been made (FMU for example ), how much the car was beaten and abused, if the engine is about to blow cuz its knocking, etc.

but its your choice bro.

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

Hmm, thanks for the input i head the same feeling on the turbo kit since i didn't really recognize the brand and when i checked there site it all looked like ultra cheap stuff.

although it's very tempting 270hp...
Could i check for turbo problems in a test drive?

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

if there's no air filter on it, you can check for shaft play, both axial and radial.
if there's any oil leaking out from the center section, and check for oil in the IC piping and downpipe.
if the turbo smokes @ idle/driving.

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

thanks, don't think i will be buying now since the other concerns start to get confirmed.
the advert also says "need to sell quickly" that was already odd.

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

Yeah XS is kind of a shoddy company when it comes to quality parts. I would avoid anything they make. And like Neck said, if it's not factory FI, stay away from it, there could be gazillions of problems waiting to rear their heads.

I thought that was just sweat from all the boots power?

Re: Turbo charged H23 - questions....

I remember on another forum some guy posting pictures of his turbo split in half. Made like 14psi, and bammm.... the whole cold side snail is held together only by the coupler connected to the intercooler piping.

It was an XS power one, that came from SSAutoCrome when they were peddling their crap all over ebay
