turbo setup?

so the other day i was hanging out with my friend who's currently in the process of rebuilding his d15 in a civic he bought. he's building up a nice turbo motor and we got to talking about just slappin a turbo on an h22 with no bottom end mods and basically a rebuilt stock head and accompanying fuel mods and such. i was wondering could it be done that way? could you run like a disco potato on a stock h22 under low(7-9lbs) boost? would you just have a very unreliable setup?

Re: turbo setup?

i believe some people here ran at 5lbs, but then later they realize its just ticking til detonation..or they just want more power so they end up rebuilding the motor to handle more boost

Re: turbo setup?

You could run 5-7 lbs safely as long as the motor can handle it. Compression and leakdown test will tell you the condition of your motor and if its able to be boosted.

I heard this also, but your fine boosting on a stock bottom end for a little while as long as your going to dump money into the block later on. I can't tell you how long the motor will last, but it won't last as long as it would stock. I can promise you that.

Re: turbo setup?

it also helps if its tuned, and if you're not going into boost everytime you drive.
It can be done, but depending on the condition of the motor, and how u treat....can affect how long it stays together.

^^^x2 x2 x2 x2 x2

You know how many people have blown motors in less than 5k miles because they didn't get it tuned? TUNING IS SERIOUS. Since I've been reading up on turbo'ing (I'm an american muscle guy at heart) the biggest advice everyone gives is to TUNE TUNE TUNE TUNE TUNE.

Re: turbo setup?

no its not a ticking time bomb. it depend if you want to spend the money to do it right the 1st time.

1. healthy motor
2. dont cheap out on parts
3. TUNE!!!! get it done by a reputable tuner familiar with your motor. not your friend down the street.

and psi has nothing to do with it. 10psi can put out different amounts of power with different turbo setups on the same motor...

Again ... x2^^^^

but as far as the psi thing, he is probably going to go with a t3/t4 or something along those lines. A small turbo. Even though your correct in your statement about the PSI, I never saw anyone put a T67 on a stock motor. And if they did, they had some balls.

Re: turbo setup?

i didnt even have to say anything on this one..... good job guys.

i ve have seen a BONE stock h22 motor handle 10psi tuned by evans. it usually turns out like anything else your gonna want to go more boost. therefore building is the important thing..... fast is not cheap, cheap is not reliable, fast + reliable = EXPENSIVE.
