AT's with an MT Shift Boot???

Hey PZ,

I always try to live by a "to each their own" philosophy, however, there's a trend that I just don't understand.

Why do owners of AT's retrofit MT shift boots (and knobs) over their..."PRND21" selectors?

I know there's a selector display on the dash, but still. Is it to make people think they have an MT? If so, wouldn't it be much easier to just learn to drive stick? I learned in just a few hours when I was like 13 years old! Also, I know people have many reasons to go AT vs. MT (e.g. bad knees, etc, etc. ). In which case, why try to cover up the fact that the car is an AT?

The reason for my question is that during my search for a Prelude I've encountered many for sale that looked to be MT but was just, in fact, an AT with a boot over the PRND21! I also see that some members here and other forums do it, not just to Preludes but to just about all "Automatic Sports Cars."

Why? Why would people do this?

Re: AT's with an MT Shift Boot???

embarrassment??? i don't think it has that much to do with people don't know how to drive stick. like me, i can but i just have an automatic. why? well i got a damn good deal on it and i was related to the previous owner who bought it brand new. i'll be honest, i'm slightly embarrassed that i drive an AUTO prelude. i get people all the time ask why i got an automatic... it's embarrassing. when i tell the story they understand of course. still. it's embarrassing. but i don't cover it up because i don't particularly care what people think about me.

my point exactly! thank you for your post.

while i know there is a certain...stigma related to AT "sports cars", like i said, i know people get them for manifold reasons! of all the prelude's i looked at, the ATs were in the BEST condition. MTs are usually all riced out to be damned! z3 fenders, home made lip kits and whatnot, you name it...

however, the covering the gear selector is what i'm really curious about. it's not my place to judge WHY people buy an AT, i just thought there might be a functional reason why people do this. to me it just seemed like a front.

i appreciate your post and your honesty! i just don't understand why someone would buy an AT and then put a boot over the gear selector?!

Re: AT's with an MT Shift Boot???

why not?

you have PRND21 on the gauge cluster as well... the manual boot looks better.

yeah, i know its on the cluster as well. but doesn't the ss shifter have a side gate for the 'manu-matic' shifting? that's not on the cluster, right?

Re: AT's with an MT Shift Boot???

yeah but those who use it, know where the gears are... similar to those who drive w/ a manual.

basically it's just for looks, and a personal preference. If you don't like it don't do it, no need to bash on someone else's choice

Oh, I'm NOT trying to bash on anyone at all! I'm sorry if that's the way my thread came across. I am just genuinely curious why people do this! It seems like a lot of work for a 'mod' that would only seem to hinder the operation of the car, to me. Like I said, I thought it actually did something, like preserve the selector or something?

But if the reason why so many are doing this is for aesthetics, then that's their choice. Personally, I don't like the looks of a wrinkly shift boot! If I could have it my way, my shifter would have a cool gate (similar to AT's) like those found on Lambos.

Someone actually made their own shift gates for an Acura (Honda's first gated shifter - Honda-Tech)! If I had any kind of machining skills I would totally do this!

yeah, it would! as i read that thread, i'm not sure it can be done with 5g ludes. i think the way the shift cables are mounted would probably mess the whole thing up. but if anyone can pull it off, i'd definitely be in line to buy one!

Re: AT's with an MT Shift Boot???

Because we get so much crap about having an automatic, that's why. Ever had an auto in an enthusiast environment? You get crap every time you talk to someone new. "Oh let me see your Lude!" 5 minutes later when they look inside: "Oh that sucks…it's an auto." And bam, no matter what they think before, you're car is now half as cool as it was(if it's still cool at all). I can't tell you how many times thats happened to me. Now, do I really care what people think? But in some points in life does it matter? Yes. So I back it up every time. Im probably going to end up doing a swap, but that won't be until the transmission says "Sayonara!" Until then, I might just do it. Oh, and it doesn't make it harder. It just kind of disguises it. My buddy has it on his, and he doesn't get as much crap(at least until they actually get in his car, which doesn't happen as often as people looking in the car) as I do.

Re: AT's with an MT Shift Boot???

that reminds me of a conversation i had with someone, who, at the time i thought was a good person, who had never seen the inside of my car. he said, "anyone who buys an automatic in a sport car, having a choice or not, should never be allowed to drive a sport car. it's just not right to own an automatic sport car. they shouldn't even call it a sport car" needless to say, i don't talk to that guy anymore. at the time i didn't care because i really don't consider the prelude a sport car. little did i know when he said sport car, he meant ANY import. so one day, he saw the inside of my car. even when i told him i had plans to swap it out and how i came about owning it. it just didn't matter to him. i and anything i touched, by association, wasn't cool anymore to him. so i told him anyone that conceited and self-absorbed is what gives import drivers a bad name.. the guy was so arrogant he couldn't let it go. for 3 years i'd still see him regularly out and about and he'd crack jokes on my car all the time. like i said it doesn't bother me. now my opening line when people start asking questions is, "it's nothing special, hell it's even an automatic." so far everyone has been pretty cool about it. i get a lot of "hey, it's still a prelude. and preludes kick ass"

If you drive a black automatic Prelude, your name is Andrew, and you live in Germany, you're gay. That is all.
