Hey I was thinking about taking out all the carpet in my car (it is an ugly green color and is making me angry) and putting in spray-on or roll-on bed liner through out the whole interior of the car.

The last owner put on an annoying fart can and my girlfriend is always complaining about the noise (I don't have anything in the trunk for weight reduction) I am thinking about taking out my rear seats so it will be even worse and I was thinking I could spray in some soundproof foam in the trunk then put bed liner over that and throughout the whole interior.

I use this car as a DD so with the bed liner I wouldn't have to worry about floor mats (I live in Idaho and it snows a lot in the winter) and I think that would be awesome. What do you guys think?

I also would like to know how much the bed liner weigh's because I have no experience with it. I would not be using it for weight reduction really but I do Auto X my car sometimes and do not want it to weigh too much but don't care if it weigh's more than carpet, which I would expect that it does?

Re: Dumb Idea?

I would also like to know how much bed liner weigh's I don't want to use it as a weight reduction because I think that it probably weigh's more than carpet but I would like my car to be somewhat light for Auto-X :P

Re: Dumb Idea?

Hehe I know I am kinda just bumping this up by myself but I wanna know what some people would think of this idea and I keep coming up with new questions! I was also wondering how much it would cost to put new carpet in my car if this bed liner was a bad idea, I need some peoples opinions! Don't be afraid to make fun of me I can take it :P lol

Re: Dumb Idea?

i have seen it done before in jeeps lol, if your worried about wieght then dont do it. the bedliner is pretty heavy and it would take alot to get the results your after. i would use dynamat and get a new carpet. but it would be really cool easy to clean lol

Re: Dumb Idea?

i just realized what i said makes no sense at all lol, seeing as how dynamat weighs alot as well.

what i was trying to say is that the amount of bedliner you would use. to get the sound reduction your after, would be alot and i think maybe just get a stock exhaust and you and your girl will be happy :)

Re: Dumb Idea?

Sounds like a good idea. It's gonna be way more durable than carpet. Its way easier to clean. I would also imagine its lighter than carpet. Like one gallon will prob get it done, Idk that for a fact. And that cant weigh as much as carpet. Good luck if u decide to do it. I know there are a lot of brands out there for that material. lizard skin claims that is reduces noise.

Re: Dumb Idea?

Haha well I was going to use the sound reduction foam in the back and then cover that in some bed liner. I dont want to use the bed liner as the sound reduction.

Re: Dumb Idea?

gotcha, can u make or get a better sounding exhaust? Is the car ur talking about the one in ur profile pic? Ive never seen the foam. That cant be to heavy? I still think it would be sick, like brodie94 mentioned of the jeeps, my buddy went to town with rhino liner in his jeep. Very durable stuff. I hope it works out!

Yeah its the one in the pic, its an ugly little beast that isn't even running yet, I have the motor torn apart and am doing a rebuild, I am probably going to get a new exhaust but I like the idea of having bed liner because it is very unique and pretty cool I think and with the sound proof foam I am sure it will help with the road noise and everything so it will just be a good addition in my mind. I will probably do this when its warmer and I get my car running again.

My buddy took out his carpet and rhyno lined it in his subaru. If i can find a picture i'll post it. It looks rad. However, its thick and is heavy. Its not the cheapest stuff either. Takes a while to dry and smells for a while. However, its a good idea. Keeps things clean looking.

Ive seen it doen in a few vehicles, I doubt it will get you much sound reduction but as far as cleaning goes its a great idea, it's not gonna help much as an insulator

Overall I really like the idea of a bedliner instead of carpets. I'm really curious how this turns out.

Not completely sure but I think the wiring would be safe under the bed liner

If you could get me that picture I would be really happy!

And does anyone know the square feet that the interior of the car would be? 40 square feet is how much one gallon will do so I don't know if one gallon will quite do it.

I saw someone on a show using that lizard skin stuff. Looks like some nice stuff to me. Probably a bit spendy though, but IMO it looks like it blows away the competition. You get what you pay for.

Re: Dumb Idea?

I painted the floor of an old crappy CRX I had with garage floor paint....worked great. If I were you I'd replace the muffler instead of bothering with spray on sound proof foam...I'd imagine that can get messy. Another thing about taking your carpet out is that some of the wiring will be exposed.

Cant you just spray over the wiring with the bed liner?

I'm not sure about that either. I don't think you'll damage the wire if the bedliner sprays at a reasonable temperature (do they spray hot and then cool off to bond?). But if you ever had a problem with a wire it would be a biatch to fix. I would make some kind of fiberglass cover or something if the wires are all together in one spot that way if you need to access them you could.

Yeah its a good idea to have them above the bedliner, I could get some plastic wrap to put around them and then tape them off to the side so they wouldn't get in my way...

Re: Dumb Idea?

I already took out the rear speakers so when I take out the carpet I could take out the rear speakers wiring then there wont be much more... heated window, tail lights, trunk release and gas lid release? anything else?

yea but i dont see it being a neat encasement. it might drip off the wiring and look like crap. if you made something to box them out first i think that would be best

Re: Dumb Idea?

You should try it, but the wires i wouldnt spray bedliner over it because if you ever want to wire something new up youll be screwed you could run the wires through a few piece of conduit(idk how to spell it) and then spray the bedliner over it that way you could pull the wires through it but make sure you run enough pieces to fit all the wires in it, im guessing it would probably be 3 or so, and then run a extra incase you want to get some subs or neons or something

Re: Dumb Idea?

Know its a bit of an older post but another option would be to buy Rustoleum sprayable rubber coating and just spray the inside with that, prob take 3 or 4 cans, and would be cheaper and easier than doing the bed liner. You can get it at Home Depot.
