White paint on interior plastic is yellowing

Ok, first to explain. I have a wood trim kit in my car, which I hate. So, I decided yo paint the kit white.
Starting with the radio bezzel, I did the proper sanding. Started with 80 grit, 120, 220. I then put two coats of Rustolieum automotive primer, then wet sanded the primer with 400 grit.
4 coats of Duplicolor "Clear White" (which I guess is a Kia color). Let that dry, and just put two coats of Duplicolor clear coat on top.

Now, as the clear coat is drying, I'm getting yellow spots in the paint. Did I screw a step up somewhere? Thanks for any tips/advice on this guys.

Re: White paint on interior plastic is yellowing

Duplicolor clear coat is crap. I had it turn yellow on my stock wheels when I painted them white. It turns more yellow when the solvents from the paint underneath haven't finished evaporating.

Also, Duplicolor clear coat is crap. It still turns a slight shade of yellow regardless.

Hmmm, damn. What clear coat would you recommend? I know I've got some Rustolieum (spelling?) clear coat laying around somewhere, if that will do a better job.

I'm going to start on the door panels tomorrow, I think I'm just going to do those flat black (which is how I did the center console part). I'm afraid to much white in the cabin will look a little to 'ricey'. Here's a pic of the bezzel re-installed. Cell phone shot, so not the best quality.

Re: White paint on interior plastic is yellowing

If you want to paint the bezel without being "ricey", try the graphite/charcoal Duplicolor wheel paint. I did my 240sx with that, and it came out phenomenal. As long as you use a clearcoat for enamel, it should come out fine. Also, don't lay clear super thick because it can come out hazy.

I took these pictures on my Razr back in high school, so they're not fantastic... but it works lol.

Damn Katrina took the carpet in my room lol.

Yeah, I think I'm going to go that route or just flat black (mainly 'cause I have 4 cans of fusion plastic paint laying around). Went for a ride for a little bit, and the more I stare at it the more it's bugging on me.

The graphite color adds more variety to the interior, without being "in your face" lol.

Dude, DONT GO WHITE PERIOD!!! My lude was completely white when i bought it, and it looked terrible!!
1. The picture he advertised on craigeslist was right after he painted his interior... it looks ultra clean

... However give it 2 or so months and it starts getting really freakin ugly yellowish like you're already seeing problems with. I might find a pic to show you what happens. I got my lude for 5500 mainly because of the interior paintjob.

2. Flat black looks awesome, but let me try to convince you not to waste your money on spray paint. Last winter my dad and i wasted close to $300 on black spray paint. I spent hours on sanding and priming... The base went on OK but the clear F***** everything up. I tried a low luster rustoleum and that didn't work either. What i noticed was the clear started to crack because of the extreme temperature changes between the sun and michigan winter. This summer the paint has the orange peal look...

Maybe it was just something i did but i see you live in Michigan too and i just wanna warn you... btw are you a student still?

Re: White paint on interior plastic is yellowing

Thanks for the warning man. I wasn't going to do the whole interior just the trim kit package. I figured if I completely screwed up I could just drop a $100 for a new oem kit.

Was talking to a girl I work with about it, and she's asked if I repaint the whole thing again if she could do some stencil work and paint the panels black and white for me. I'm debating on letting her, she's a good artist and could probably do some sick stuff. Right now I'm still leaning towards going to the flat black or the graphite like Phantom used.

Yeah, I'm still a student. Marketing major at EMU in Ypsilanti, live right on the A2/Ypsi border while schools in. In the summer go back home to Monroe (north of Toledo, south of Detroit). Where's Stevensville at? Can't say I've ever heard of it.

Re: White paint on interior plastic is yellowing

ahhh alright, I thought you went to Michigan bc of your avatar... Stevensville is a very small town next to Benton Harbor/St. Joesph right across the lake from Chicago. I'm a senior in high school and i thought i'd ask about Michigan, bc i know around 20 sophmores and juniors that go to michgan and i'm applying this year...
Its nice to know that there are other people near my age into prelude tuning... gl with school.

Lol, yeah I'm a wanna be Michigan student. Eastern's right next door so I at least get to stay in the U of M environment. I'm hoping to transfer there for my masters degree, we'll see if I can pull the grades though. Let me know if you get in for next year man, we'll go crash some parties or something together.

Bleh, I wouldn't waste my time painting the interior. Just buy replacement pieces.

Re: White paint on interior plastic is yellowing

I just went with a flat black and saving up for the carbon fiber kit. I'd love an aluminum kit, but I don't think Honda made one. Not that I've seen at least.
