Icon9 Water Damage! :(

4th Gen Prelude:

I have a leak on my passenger side floorboard, and it likes to leave a musty smell, and ruin my carpet. I recently looked into buying new weatherstripping for the door frame, and it's extremely overpriced in the $100s for each side. So I went to a salvage yard and looked at 4 ludes and picked the best stripping off one for $15. There's no rips or tears in them, and somehow my floorboard still manages to get wet when it rains hard. It also rusted my passenger side door speaker and it's now dead, (I think it's from the leak, not sure).

Has anyone else had this problem, and had it fixed? I'd greatly appreciate some advice so my interior won't continue to ruin.

Also, I think I read in another post that it could be from the moonroof drain tubes being damaged. I just haven't checked them yet.

Thanks.

Re: Water Damage! :(

Are you sure it's the weatherstripping? I had a leak in the passengers side of my mivec which also happened to get wet on rainy days but it turned out to be one of the rubber grommets on the floor of the car. You know the ones that are there incase you drive into a flood or something. Anyways one of those was leaking and anytime the car was driven in the rain, water would leak up through it. I know it wouldn't really explain the speaker getting rusted but if you're not 100% sure it's the weatherstripping it's worth doing a test and it'd be a lot less expensive to replace.

Re: Water Damage! :(

I concur with Irishluder and I would like to add...

If there is NOT a drip loop in the wires that come through the fender and in to the interior cabin right above and to the right of the ECU, water will POUR in to your passenger footwell.

The best thing to do is to pull your carpet... Dry everything, then use a garden hose to simulate the leaks.. run over your hood, fender, doors, anywhere there is a seam. You will eventually discover where it is coming from.

Once the problem has been found you need to hit all metal surfaces with a wire brush then re-spray with at MINIMUM a primer coat to prevent any more rusting.
My build thread in the members ride section and also in the INTERIOR section has some links and write-ups, pics of what i am talking about.

Re: Water Damage! :(

^^ yep, that's exactly what I did to find my leak and it worked. Don't forget to turn the hose up under the car too for the floor grommets after checking everywhere else. It helps a lot if you have someone sitting in the car while you're doing it all too

Thanks for the reply guys, I'll have to try some of those ideas when I get my ride situated. Doing body work on it right now, because of an accident I was in.

Re: Water Damage! :(

Oh, I fixed the leak a while back, turns out it was a grommet that some of the A/C wires run through right above the ECU and such. I did a write up on it and all. Thank for looking out, though.
