Wheel colors

Hey im thinking of refreshing the look of my car, specifically my wheels. I cant afford new ones so i figured I would paint or plastidip the ones i already have. They are the stock blades on a 2000 Crystal blue metallic lude. Any suggestions for colors?

Re: Wheel colors

Just pick a color of plasti-dip you like.

Clean the wheels with some bar keepers friend and a tooth brush, then some mothers alluminum polish...if you aint impressed with that, do the plasti-dip thing.

Just don't do like those knuckleheads who spray the wheels on the car with full tires, then try to armor all away the over spray.
Take the wheels off 1 at a time, deflate the tires to ensure your masking tape gets into the crevice between the wheel and tire. Do the spray thing, cure as the can says, and BAM!!
But then you're stuck with those rusty lug nuts....
Plasti- dip will likely peel on the lug nuts when re-tightening so keep that in mind. So you either have to buy pre-colored from say 'sicspeed' at their ebay store, powdercoat what you have or get some chrome ones at an auto parts store...
Or be prepared to brush on some plasti-dip after tightening down the lug nuts.

^^ bar keepers friend thing.
Right = before, Left = after

Then a few applications of the Mothers stuff and your old dull wheels will POP!

^^ barkeepers and mothers to some unsanded sand cast alluminum parts.

^^ same for this used power steer pump.

Maybe try masking over the outter parts of the wheels and spray some of the nooks and crannies for a stellar, unobtrusive look....

Check out the OGSMAKDADE build thread to see what he did to his blades. Mirror finish on the major parts with the vent portions coated with a high glass metal flake paint...then just use your imagination.

Re: Wheel colors

All the common wheel colours (White, Silver, Black) look pretty good on blue 'ludes, but IMO the sawblades look best in silver.

They're your wheels though, you have to live with them. If you like fluoro green then do that. There is no excuse for gold wheels.

Re: Wheel colors

Duplicolor has some paint they advertise is specifically for wheels...comes in a couple of basic colors (not pink, though). I'm not sure what's different about it, but I redid my Miata wheels in black. I lightly sanded them with 600 grit to rough up the surface, cleaned them thoroughly (the tires weren't mounted), and laid down 2 coats of primer, 4 coats of color, and 3 coats of flat clearcoat, leaving 2 hours minimum between coats. I think you could probably use any color if you clean, prime and clearcoat the wheels well. I've had it on for about 9 months, and so far it's holding up pretty well, even with me changing the wheels at autocrosses a couple times a month (so lots of contact with the lug wrench). This picture from last December shows them pretty well -- that's just a weekend's worth of spray painting wheels : https://www.facebook.com/27473701961...e=1&permPage=1

What color? For that light blue, silver's tough to beat...black would overpower it, and the only cars white wheels look good on are white cars. But lay some color chips against the car and see what looks good. If you don't like the color after laying down the first color coat, you can always switch!

Re: Wheel colors

Just pick the color you want. Besides plastidip is not permanent so you can peel it off if you don't like the outcome.

Black rims would look great on a metallic blue car.

Re: Wheel colors

Honestly, if you are doing wheels on a metallic blue car.. I would maybe do a cool dark silver or maybe gunmetal... Black rims look great and especially on the color car you have but I learned from my 2001 Celica GTS (black) that its impossible to keep clean... Stay away from black rims.. If its hard to keep a black car clean, imagine doing it for your rims.
