Rock chip - windshield

My windshield has a little ping crack

Driving home on the highway i saw the little rock in slow motion and then

I can wait until it spreads and cracks(to replace entire glass) or i can tackle the job now. What do you guys here suggest i use to fill in the little ping? Can i go to auto store and pick up such a solution?

dont tell me to search i will ban you.

Re: Rock chip - windshield

I don't think that's something you can DIY; at least I've never seen any kits sold @ Autozone.

If you have a Safelite around you, depending on your coverage, it might get covered under insurance (mine was at least). And I think it's much easier to tackle earlier just a chip, rather than later once it starts to spider crack.

Re: Rock chip - windshield

They do sell DIY kits, but it depends on what kind of crack it is. Some fill in easily, others don't take at all. You can go to a glass shop to fill it too, but it will cost significantly more than a DIY. What they usually don't tell you with the kits is you inject the resin into the glass, then use a lighter or a torch on low and heat the inside of the glass a little. It heats up the resin and usually helps distribute it easier. Bullseye crack is by far the easiest to fill in.

They have glass filler at auto stores. Pepboys does for sure in the paint and body section. You should find it in a tube near the hardener, spot putty etc.

A comprehensive policy with full glass does the trick every time. Well worth the additional cost.

this. check with your insurance first, most of them do actually cover it, or will offer a discount for replacment

Fix it now. Whether your insurance covers it or not.

Re: Rock chip - windshield

i second it.... i got pulled over and hassled about my giant crack through half my windshield lol... it's better to have it fixed and if the insurance can cover it cool... i found a guy who had a business of replacing windshields and other windows.. cost me a hundred flat... not a lot of money i think it is worth it...

Re: Rock chip - windshield

Already? Safelite repair\safelight replace. Your car deserves it, and they have the good patch kit that makes it disappear doooo iiitttt!!!

Reminds me ... Random foreign debris scuffed up mona's driver mirror while driving home the other night.

Gotta love the NYC.

I fully expect to be banned the next time I try to sign in lol.

give safelite a shot. I wouldn't be risking some DIY stuff on a brand new car.

Chips may go years without growing. Then one day you wash your car, or turn on the defroster... and
Craaaaaaaaaaack!

Re: Rock chip - windshield

^^wutdaheck are you talking about?
Reckon that's why they call it dope.

I had a chip that did not change for like 8 years on my pickup truck windshield (knowing I have glass coverage). This past winter I didn't clean the snow off the truck but let the sun melt it....
Bad Idea!!!
That greenhouse cab vs the snow on the outside yielded a former chip, now 3' long gash across the windshield. Now I realize this post is in August...that should tell how much I drive the truck...
But Mr. Glass dude is getting a call soon. That's why paying those extra $75 a year for coverage is money well spent.

Now on my prelude a chip would be fixed imediately with new glass because a chip in your hot rod's windshield just looks like crap. And although the safelite repair works...it looks like a patch.

Re: Rock chip - windshield

I have Progressive insurance and they don't cover glass replacement or repair. When I was with Geico, they(Safelite) came and gave my Acura a new glass pronto.

a year or so has passed and that crack is still the same size. I was afraid during the brutal winter and especially when I was in Buffalo(NY) that the glass would start to go, "snap, crackle and pop."

Knock on wood. I'll wait until the rice crispies trio visits my car

Re: Rock chip - windshield

Progressive takes your money so you can check the yes I have insurance box at DMV.

State Farm asks if you want your window fixed at your location or at a shop...

When I crashed my truck (my fault) they let me pick the body shop then later that year gave me a 10% discount for going 6 months w/o crashing.

Re: Rock chip - windshield

My prelude came with what looks like a tiny tiny rock hit it and somebody filled it, I have only owned it for 3 weeks so far but I have hit 70-90 pretty regularly (highway speed limits are 70 here but everyone goes about 80-85)...

So far it looks like its not an issue, just a tiny imperfection to deal with someday when another rock or something hits it.
