VHT Nightshades

Hey guys, So I searched the forum, and I can't seem to find a solid opinion or thread about them, so here it goes. What do you guys think about VHT Nightshades? Are they legal(I've heard its not), and if they are do any of you that have done it have any pointers or little niches to watch out for?

Re: VHT Nightshades

Its not legal, and unless you spray a clear coat of paint over it afterwards, it doesn't last very long.

According to my pig of a step uncle, any lights that didn't come with the car, illegal, any light thats ben modified, illegal.

You can do whatever you want though, chances are, unless you run into one who just so happens to be the biggest penis in the world, you should be able to get away with it. If you get pulled over for speeding, be prepared to get an aditional sitation.

Re: VHT Nightshades

^ for the most part correct. most states make it illegal for any tint on light lenses unless from the factory. but just don't do it excessively dark. it does attract attention.

i've had VHT sprayed on my back lights for about 4 or 5 years or so. i did a writeup on how to do it correctly.. a clear coat will help. but if you keep your lights clean and wax them at least once every few months you should bee fine. mine haven't faded or lost their luster.

edit: the writeup is on PP.

Re: VHT Nightshades

Thanks to both of you for the info. I read on the website that it said "Recommended for off road use" which I thought meant it was illegal. But I didn't want to make any assumptions.

[QUOTE=Beaker;529443 most states make it illegal for any tint on light lenses unless from the factory. but just don't do it excessively dark. it does attract attention.[/QUOTE]

Do you(and Wilka) mean that its illegal to change anything about any light on your vehicle unless it's a factory option??? Cause I have aftermarket headlights...and until now I had not heard that they were illegal......
Anyways, I'll be sure to check that write-up on preludepower. Thanks again to both of you. Any other opinions, facts, or otherwise that anyone else has are still more than welcome.

I don't know that Im going to do it now. But, Im still looking for something after I put some sort of wheel and tire combination on it to make it look good, especially the back. In yalls opinion, does it look better stock from the back?

Unless they are a dot approved stocl replacement chances are they are "illegal." However not every cop (read: most if any) will be able to distinguish them as anything but. On top of which most cops really couldnt give a ****, unless of course they are just being a dick, as stated above it could wind you up with an extra citation. As for headlights I'm sure if you piss of the right cop with your hids while speeding hes gonna bust you, but more than likely you're not going to get pulled strictly for them (read: If the cop tell you he pulled you over for your headlights, its complete bull**** and hes just fishing for something bigger to stick you with.) All in all its like window tint. Is it illegal to have it really dark? Yes. Are you attracting more attention to yourself? Yes. Is it going to instantly get you pulled over by every cop in the city? Not necessarily. Its something you just have to weigh the risk of and be prepared to take a hit for if you want to rock it that way.

I had tint on my tails for about a year, had plenty of cops behind me in traffic night and day, and never once had an issue. As long as you dont drive like a dumbass or do something to piss them off and give them a legit reason to pull your ass over, they generally will leave you alone.

Unless you live in NYC or Cali.

Re: VHT Nightshades

can't forget illinois (chicago area) doug.

for as long as i've had my tail lights tinted, i've never gotten a ticket or really bothered for it. i did the same thing you wanted to do, just the lower strip (reverse/turn signals). it does look OEM since VW's come with their rear signal lights tinted now. and mine is about the same darkness as the VW's. i've been pulled over twice in FL so far for speeding and not once a question about my tail lights. however, one time i did get stopped in illinois in the middle of the night for driving with florida plates and they were asking me a million questions. one of them about tail lights. it wasn't so much a question as it was a statement. they said that tinting tail lights is illegal in illinois... but ultimately they couldn't write me a ticket because i'm not from illinois. unless they actually took to time to find out if it was illegal in FL too. in the end, you are only required to abide by traffic laws. they can't enforce modification laws (tint, exhaust, etc) they can't force you to swap your exhaust and rip off your tint every time you cross state lines. that would be a violation of the 10th amendment.

moral of the story: stay away from ****cago area, new york ****ty, and anywhere in kommifornia. no offense to anyone who lives in those areas.

Re: VHT Nightshades

I've had alot of experience with VHT Nightshades, I've used it on 5 of my previous vehicles (tastefully) and my brothers have used it on several of their vehicles as well. It's not technically legal, but unless you're a complete dick to the cop you should be fine, I've been pulled over several times for speeding and they've never once even mentioned my lights being tinted. I've even had several vehicles pass motor vehicle inspection with tinted lights and it's never been mentioned or even hinted at. I should mention I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada. I've decided not to use it on my Lude simply because I love the look of it as is.

If you're going to use VHT Nightshades make sure your lenses are super clean first, clean them with alcohol really good. Spray it on in VERY light coats because it will run if it goes on even reasonably thick. No matter how dark you go with it make sure you clear coat over top or they will fade and get cloudy. I've got lots of pics of my previous vehicles I could post if anyone wants examples. Hope I've helped

Re: VHT Nightshades

Woah. Thanks a whole bunch for the advice man! I just think it would look good with my black on white theme. Some pictures if you have them would be awesome! By clear coating over the top of it, you mean clear coat over it once I finish right?

Re: VHT Nightshades

I drive a 1991 Ford Escort and the tail lights are blacked out, but the light still shines through. I assume that because the cops still see light at any time, they don't pull me. However, I won't pass inspection with them because that's something they look for in particular. Now that's what i've found in NC. I have driven the car out of the state to GA, so through SC, and to VA without ever being pulled.

Because of the taillights, it won't pass inspection?? What about the light do they look for? And to anyone else who has this, did your car pass inspection?

Re: VHT Nightshades

Because of the tail lights and the front corners, Yes. I had to buy another set of OEM's to pass. The only part of the light that you can tint without any recourse is the reverse light. The turn signals, brake lights, and head lamps have to be unchanged to pass with exception to aftermarket housings. The tint won't pass because it's impeding the light.

Re: VHT Nightshades

Headlights are fine... I got an aftermarket pair of headlights... And it's passed inspection with them. I was only planning to do the clear strip on the tails cause I think that's all that looks good IMHO. What do you think?(in terms of it passing inspection?) And is said inspection one they do while doing emissions?

Re: VHT Nightshades

Yea. Depending what state you're in, it's the thing you have to do every year or two so that the state can verify that your car is in good running condition for the road. and if you do want to tint them, I'd say buy a pair of OEMs to swap out for inspection. That's what I did for my escort. I have my tinted pair and my stock pair. and I think the clear would look nice like that. Just don't tint them too much. I think the grayed out look is nice for that area.

Actually, if you do it. After, take it to an inspection station and ask him if they'll pass. Usually they'll just tell you yes or no and why. If he says no, buy a set of OEMs to swap.
