getting paint job sooon

im going with maaco. i know they are not the best but in these t.e.t's (tough economic times) the price is right, and im tired of looking at my two toned black half sanded car.

so my question is what prep work should i do since i get the impression maaco wont do any of it enless i pay

-im already pulling out my dent (they wanted $120 to do it)
-they dont prim enless i pay so shuld i prim or just have them paint over original color????
-and i was thinking of shaving my antennae any1 kno of a good possibly cheap kit to do that with???
-o yea and i want to remove front H badge and rear prelude emblem is there circles beneath them or are they glued on?????

any other paint prep im not thinking of???

Take it primed, if its a 4th gen then it has holes under all the emblems, if its a 5th gen then it only has holes under the H emblem.

Re: getting paint job sooon

U dont have to prime it, BUT it will look a lot better, get it down to the metal and prime it up and take it to maaco and it wont look like a cheap paint job. My cousins friend got his car done in maaco but they painted over the old paint, he got a lil ding and the hole area where he got hit cracked. Use bondo to fill up the holes and sand it down nicely.

Re: getting paint job sooon

Yeah, sand it and prime. If you take it to them with the original paint they may only sand it enough to rough up the surface... if they even do that. Then they put on heavy coats of paint so it will stick but it doesn't allow it to flex with the body so eventually it fill chip and flake off. Better get MAACO my a$$!!

Re: getting paint job sooon

Along with the OP i'd also like to know what to do about shaving down the antenna, for when I get a 4th gen :D? Would that just be another thing you could sand down to the body level and then bondo it?

I hope the paint turns out great.

Re: getting paint job sooon

ahhhh, what grit is that and why aren't you using a DA sander. WAY TOO much seriously. Go to an automotive paint supply store tell them what you are doing and it's your first time, they will get you what you need.

Re: getting paint job sooon

just get a lighter grit and you should be fine i would pay some one to do it so they do a good even job and all man bc prep and prime is a pretty big step for a nice tone and finish but this might be an off topic question but where exactly did you get that antenna man my antenna broke about 6 months ago and i need one badly and i dont want a motorized one or a long one thats litk the perfect size what u have but if you wanna sell it ill be wiling to buy it from you or what website or place did you get it from? Thanks!

Re: getting paint job sooon

Here's what you need to do for prep.

If you are priming the car yourself, sand your car with 220 grit paper on a DA sander. or do it by hand iwth 400 grit WET paper. Make sure you tape off your moldings before you go crazy sanding because those are expensive to replace if you mess them up.

After you have it all primed give the primer a few days to harden. (depending on the temp on where you live). Then sand your primer with 400 wet again to get all the primer orange peel out...it will show through to the paint.

You do not need to go down to bare metal, infact if you do you have to spray it with self-etching primer to prevent future rust. To make scuffing easier, go buy some red scotch brite from 3m. A lot faster than sanding.

As for shaving the anntenna, you pretty much take it out, weld it up, grind your weld flat, put fiber glass over it to build up your panel, then put body filler, then primer, then paint.
