cf hood

im getting a cf hood for free but it needs work like alot the guy said it just needs to be refinished like sanded etc.
so i asked my friend if he could refinish it for me and he tells me that cf cant be refinished that if i sanded it and wet sanded it ill be down to the cf and if i throw a new clear coat on it will be all wavy looking

so i just wanted to know is there a way to refinish cf to make it look decent?
and if so how?

Re: cf hood

The problem with sanding down cf is that if you sand too deep, you can damage the gel coat. I went to a body shop when my integra's carbon fiber hood was faded from the sunlight. I got an estimate of $240.00 US dollars, but they "guaranteed" that it would look like new. I didn't do it because I only paid 175.00 for the hood when I got it in excellent condition.
It depends on the hood as well, some carbon fiber hoods are made of different material.
What you can do is try to buff it out as much as possible. Use some wax and polish, if that doesn't work, then I would look into wet sanding and getting a new clear coat.

Re: cf hood

Is the hood faded/oxidized? Or are there cracks and nicks?

Re: cf hood

You can try some rubbing compound or scratch X, but don't use too much force or it could damage the hood. Then use some polishing compound, that might work a bit.

Re: cf hood

that doesnt work u need to re clear it i am a carbon fiber whoreee lol u got to sand it with like 3000 grit sand paper and water spray it on there then re clear it with a coat... around here it does cost about 250 which jc ball is correct on but to do it right thats what u have to do... i had alot of oxidation and it was hazyed but once i cleared it looked 10x better the compound works but if its in sunlight its a waste of money cause it comes back i re clear my hood and trunk 2x a year or until i see it come back pm me if u need more help on it
