CF Hood Question

So...I live in Illinois where it can get HOT in the summer and bitter cold in the winter. Do carbon fiber hoods do fine with climate fluctuations or does it **** with them? I need a new hood anyway and if I can go with CF I would be stoked.

Re: CF Hood Question

carbon hoods are vulnerable to heat. i would def say that if you do get one you should def go with a good brand. i have a VIS. they make a great hood. durable, excellent fitment. here is where i got mine:
AeroDesigns

a good way to better protect your cf hood is to have an autobody shope apply additional clear coat and you should always keep the hood waxed.

good luck!

Re: CF Hood Question

I had my Carbon Fiber trunk before last winter and since I had my old trunk laying around, I took it off just to be safe - but this winter will be the first time it will see blistering cold - I'm hoping it holds out!! Carbon Fiber is the strongest and lightest material for the car - so I would hope that it can withstand a little temperature change

Some kind of underhood heat insulation isn't a bad idea either.

Yeah I would definitely keep the stock pieces and put them on near the beginning of winter. My car rolls on stock rims in the winter so it looks like **** anyway lol, it can't get worse really.

Rhys... CF is strong as shyt but my biggest issue is that with the cold comes the snow and with snow comes ice... ice scratches.

def swap your stock shyt for the CF in the inclement weather and just put it all back on in the spring.

VIS FTW!!

Re: CF Hood Question

Yeah I was definitely going ViS. I need a new hood anyway since I hit a deer, so after I get my engine work done that will probably be the first thing to come. And I got time to save too, cuz winter is coming, and not much I can do body-wise in the winter. Can't wait til spring.

Being that the use of CF originated with NASA using it on spacecraft, i would say your trunk will be able to withstand the cold Minnesota winter no problem.

dude why risk havin it out in the shytty weather. protect your investment. i have a guy near me who offered to do a straight up swap for a used trunk lid and i turned it down for the sole reason that i will not have CF hood mounted in the winter.

and i'm not sure if i bought the last one from them. might have. click on ask member a question and ask them a question. LOL

good luck.... keep me posted

Re: CF Hood Question

My seibon hood took the coolest weather last winter in westren New York (-15) with out any issues. Then I moved back to Missouri were it was over 100 a few times still no cracks. The only issue I had with the hood was teh fitment when I first bought it (seibons mold was screwed up and it was a bit warpped on the right side of it. But I was told by Mikey at Seibon they fixed the issue)

I have a friend that has a Is300 and the guy has had every good brand of Cf hood on his car (vis, carbon creations, and a seibon) The seibon's fit and finsh was the best out of all of them ( rolled edges ftmfw)

There are my two cents I hope you take them in lol

Hmm. That fawked up CF hood is scary. I would def. swap em' out in the winter, it would only take like 15 minutes anyway. Now I guess I have to decide between Seibon and ViS. Seibon is becoming more appealing every day.

Re: CF Hood Question

Gotta agree with Si Speed but tha heat insulation, tha haze the carbon fiber hoods tend to get (usually in the center area ) come from the engine heat, so heat tape or insulation put on the underside of the hood would definitely do some good for preventing haze, also to keep the hood lookin nice, i put on a lil armorall after washing and it works great!

VIS is actually the smaller partner company of Seibon. Seibon also owns VIS. The seibon has better quality material and is molded better.

Re: CF Hood Question

alright enough going back and fourth between seibon and vis there both good companys but seibon cost more.I have heard plenty of bad stories about both everyone knows they will have problems.

Id go with vis and save money and still have a really good hood.Be smart take it off in winter or park your car for the winter like alot of people do.I know someone that has a vis hood that he hates because its carbon fiber and he jumps on it all the time at the car shows and its still as good as new.

Re: CF Hood Question

Yeah I decided I'm definitely going to get a CF hood over the winter. I was gonna buy a new computer here soon but I decided to put everything else besides bills on the back burner and just dump all my money into my car lol. If I just straight up save my money, by the time Spring rolls around I could probably have $4000-$5000 saved for car parts. I could easily get a CF Hood/Trunk and get my body work done for that. Now it's just a matter of stayin' out of the strip club haha

4-5k for parts is a nice little budget but i would say just limit your visits to the strip club... don't just quit cold turkey. baby steps man, baby steps! LOL

Re: CF Hood Question

Me and my cousin used to go after work all the time since it was like ten minutes away, they always sold us booze without ID'ing us, so why not? We decided to quit going though after we dropped like $690 between the two of us one night lol. It is a bad bad place.

It comes down more to the luck of the draw I think. I've seen just as many fked VIS products as I have Seibon products. And on the other side of the coin, there are just as many that are absolutely wrapped in their purchase of one brand over another that they will defend that brand's honour to the death.

Really? I never knew that.
