Re: S.F Area Autocross??
Batches of 'em...the annual Duel at DeAzna (DeAnza College) is in a couple of weeks...always a cool, offbeat event.
See 2010 SFR SCCA Solo Calendar

i've noticed a lot of people tell me... leave it in the 2nd gear. is that true? (expecially for autocross)

Re: S.F Area Autocross??
Yes. It's rarely worth it to go back to first gear -- generally you have to shift back up to second almost immediately anyhow, so you're better off maintaining control of the wheel and just drag it through in second. This is especially true in 4th and 5th gen cars -- the H-series engines have nice, fat, torque curves for a 4-cylinder. Downshifting to first at speed takes some practice, too -- easy to spend lots of time wrestling the car into gear, during which time you're not braking or steering as well as you could be. It is a skill you should acquire at some point...then use very sparingly.
In the rare cases you need to go to third, you'll know it because you'll be banging off the rev limiter. If you're just touching it and then having to lift or brake, it's a similar situation to downshifting to first...not worth the time to shift up and then down. But if you're spending more than a few seconds on the limiter, there's more speed to be had by shifting. In those cases (and for 1-2 shifts as well), it's sometimes worth short-shifting just a bit in order to get your hands back on the wheel when you need them. Just be aware you'll probably have to come back to second at some point and know where on the course you're going to downshift, for the same reason.

Re: S.F Area Autocross??
Your best bet is to go to the San Francisco Region's Sacramento Chapter website -- S.C.C.A. Sacramento Solo2 events -- and check their schedule. They split their time between Mather Field in Sacramento, and the fairgrounds right there in Stockton. There's a link on the site that describes an event if you've never done one before, but honestly, you can turn up, tell the registration crew it's your very first event, and they should be able to help you out. Or ask questions...will give you what help I can from the Other Coast.

Re: S.F Area Autocross??
June 12th? I saw June 26th at the Fairgrounds. Keep in mind that many of the marque clubs out there (Porsche, BMW, Lotus) are members only events -- you'll see their dates on the schedule, but they're not open events. (Some things haven't changed in 15 years....)
