:::Sideswipe SI::: 2004 GTO AKA "MONA"

Hey guys and gals!
Didn't even know what category, tO put this in, but 56K users brace yourselves for lag.
I have albums for Helga and Mona on my member's page, but never did a Member's ride for Sideswipe. For personal reason's I felt My prelude was never ready or up to my expectations or should have a progress thread. One dead prelude later, I started fresh. I took the money I put aside for my B20A turbo build and bought Mona. Like a kid who got kissed by a "THE HOT CHEERLEADER," SOLD I've been Through a lot with this car too. Hit and runs, backed into, and just other things that you would expect from owning a car of this caliper. My life has changed that I wasn't taking real care of the car and just letting her get old. I'M over it.

This little intro is just an explanation to why She isn't perfect immaculate, She lives Rowdy and has had her shares of scrapes and she just needs a little TLC, compliments of her owner, LOL!!!

SOme pics from her heyday:

A pending job strike almost part our ways, (another damn challenge) and I fought and worked to keep her. This last winter kicked her ass a little, So I'm gonna update this thread with every little thing she's gonna get until I'm happy with the car. She will be 9 years old this November.

Let's begin:

Here is how she sits now, Stock for the most part:
Diablo Tune
K&N CAI filter kit
BMR Strut Tower Brace
LS7 Flywheel and Clutch
Continental Extreme contacts
HID 12K headlights
BIG THREE upgrade
Autometer Volt meter in the Engine bay
GIANT ASS NEW CAR SMELL TREE LOL

I have in the works:
Hotchkiss HD sway bars front and back
KING springs "0-drop" progressive spings
PEDDERS "anti rub kit"
Ls6 heads (not for a while)

What I've recently done......

Big Three with new terminals and volt meter gauge:

Tie-wrapped positive terminal cover that did not do it's job. Thanks GM. looks just like the negative.
And for Sh!t and giggles, the car would not turn over because the red would loosen by itself. DAFUQ. so...

Let's Prep this foolishness:::

4AWG wires from sideswipes ground kit. Perfect for the Fusebox, seeing it was 6awg

The Negative's

The Terminals

The wires

I posted an DIY on 1/0 awg wires a week and change ago, if some pics look familiar. I'll try not to post repeats if it's not needed.

The first thing I had to do was remove all the damn Eletrical tape and Split flex loom tubing. No pics because that was nasty dirty... just ugh!!!!! Saw that there are 2 4awg wires coming from the alternator. So the 1/0 was not needed. The grounds on the other hand were awful. So with the battery terminal still connected to the battery, (negative already disconnected) I fought with the screws that anchored to the terminal. Mini breaker bar did short work of that. Then I clipped off the terminal.

Off came the cover and that scrawny terminal. Had to remove a wire bracket that was unnecessary to re-route the positive. So damn cramped! I saw there was no reasonable solution, so I made a short jumper from 1/0, Used the screws/nuts from the grounding kit, and made an Accessories Junction (not like she needs it but always good to have.) Best part? Both wires fit perfectly in the 1/0 awg ring terminal so one crazy crimp, on one solid joint. Here's some pics:

Thought I had a pic of the Flex tubing back on, Guess not. Buuut, the junction is covered and protected. Ok... Fusebox wire. Again, short as sh!t... had those red ground kit wires laying around, Did a Big three with Helga with those, easy peasy. Just needed one, simple work, you'll see...

you really can't tell, just the way I like it, More OFC wiring, and the flex tube blends it right in. yessssssssss

I did have to reseal the terminal connections for the 4 awg wires though, the heat shrink died nothing a little super vinyl tape from 3M can't fix.

While I was in there, I took out the POS hid ballasts that the Auto-body shop put in. I'm telling you, If you have a place your dad and uncle go to for their auto body work, go there too. My shop made her look amazing, (STOOPID HIT AND RUNS) but they fragged the details, like not leaving my $600 Phillips HID ballasts alone (yeah they were oem real types) an put in ching chang chong balasts that were grounding out. Huh.

The beautiful, easy to conceal replacements! Ballasts have come along since 2009

What they also didn't do is put my ENTIRE K&N hardware back in. It was missing bolts, and flopped around and just SUCKED. So got all the hardware and another filter. (pain in the ass to put it back in, but done.)

Re: :::Sideswipe SI::: 2004 GTO AKA "MONA"

Ok! now I hate the fact, you have to work like a pig to add A volt gauge to a car that was 37k once in it's life. I didn't want a tampered harness, I can change engine bay stuff, but not within the cabin itself. There is a kit, but it's $600.00 and the install looked second grade, so I decided to go engine bay mount.
Problem: The engine bay of the 2004-2006 GTO bay is a thermo-nuclear oven. Any gauge will not do.
Auto meter has an solution: Colbolt gauge series. The Font is eerily similar to the GTO interior gauges, soooo WIN. The system uses LED lighting.... WIN. The bracket mounts perfect to the Inner valence trim... WIN. LOW CURRENT DRAW... WIN!!!!!!!!

Here some more pics...
The back of the Gauge

Positive wire [stereo wire, lol]

Negative wire [more stereo wire]

NOTE: I wrapped both sets with vinyl electrical; black-neg, blue-pos, to keep with the gauge theme
I used these connections:

For the back of the gauge

For the ground in the Engine bay. This car had a lot of ground points meant for grounding set up, no paintjob scratch... WIN
Almost there...

see how one of the positives has a black bank around it? That's the L.E.D. positive, so I don't forget.

Now for the Test: (Always have a Motorcycle/Scooter battery hanging around for electrical testing)

A picture in total darkness:

Hey!!!! that battery is a little low. Off to the trickle charger!!!

Ok, I used Scotch Permanent Outdoor mounting tape. it can hold up to 5 Pounds weight. The gauge with harness comes out over 1 1/2lbs so WIN! I also planned the new wiring to add additional support to the back of the gauge and well the GRAND FINALE:
BEFORE:

AFTER:

Working LED check:

night pics:(the fire shield caps the light at night, and the needle doesn't move unless you turn on headlights or open doors, LOL)

More to Come these weeks, Hopefully, I'll be able to clean the engine bay before the Tristate meet! So dusty!

When you don't see them every day, you forget how beautifully proportioned they are. Every proportion is just right. And they're a hoot do drive too.

Yes, Chris, show us the interior!

Re: :::Sideswipe SI::: 2004 GTO AKA "MONA"

Niiiiice.

3x on the interior pix.

Looking forward to updates.

The other evening I saw a blue/gray/silver? gto in a parking lot all alone while heading to retrieve the boat anchor that used to set under the hood of Lucky. I thought to myself that hopefully you'd do this thread someday here at pz.
I also thought about the fact that they too must find it nearly impossible to find parts, hence it was 50 yards away from all the other auto's at that strip mall.

Gonna take some pics on lunch break fellows! Tonight you can see how clean I keep her! Also hurrican sandy dropped a branch on her front fender, so it has 2 dings in it ... Rats.

Still love this car, and you're right mike, off to OHIO to buy an entire gto parts in a couple of years. That's bananas.

Awww if I ever bought a V8 it'd be in one of those! I had a friend awhile back that had one..all that was done were long tube headers, a 125 shot of NOS and a tune. Fast as ****, but scary as **** around corners cuz it was so floaty haha.

Love it man, thanks for sharing.

Very nice.

They drifted the hell out of these things on Top Gear. They also loved them. I thought about getting one myself. I'm looking forward to seeing your thread on Mona.

Well:
A. Gas tank(s) were relocated to the roomy trunk to pass rear collision standards (thanks pinto)
B. Driver side remained on the right, GM moved all the stuff to the left, where it is cramped
C. The last person in the pass. Side moved the chair up, there is space for 4 adults in this 2+2.

The newer camaro's and corvettes are astronomically priced. I bought Mona for NEW Rsx type-s money and she had only 7371 miles on her odometer.

My favorite part? Got 4 extra cylinders, loppy idle madness!! I love the sound of a H22 singing in vtec, but I also love the sublte rumble and being rocked to sleep with meat locker A/C.

Wow, I can't believe how dirty that motor is.. what with the dust spec on the master cylinder cap and all. No blitz under that motor, aye?

That is one sweet ride bro!

Yes. And a 16mp pocket camera. I know it's not your sniper camera, but the pics gonna be promising!

Mike, mona has a racing oil sump pan, very neat to clean. The dirt part is me not getting water next to anything vital. Gotta be a hot summer day so the water dries fast. I will be using a blow dryer to remove moisture too. Pics coming

I understand the hot summer day, quick remove moisture thing. Water spots are tough to get rid of. Are there any dirt repelant products you reccomend?

I hope my engine bay is only that dirty someday.
