The Mistress - An Ongoing 8 Year Project

I have been so busy the last year or so with writing articles and doing photography for a local automotive blog that I haven't had the time to shoot the Prelude. Finally got around to taking her out for a real photoshoot, first time in about 2 years. All of these were shot with a Nikon D7000 and 18-105mm lens. No flashes were used except for the interior shots, the rest is natural lighting. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Enjoy.

Re: The Mistress

This is the reason that you will be seeing the stock cluster for the last time. Working on swapping in an AP1 S2000 digital cluster.

Thanks, I took a photography class in college that helped me get a really good grasp on the basics and everything else has been self taught through trial and error.

Nice backgrounds. No slaves? Amazing!!

I use the 18-105 on mine the most. The 7000 kills it, man.

Hand held?

I tweak with faststone. Ever heard of it? Super slick, low profile software available on the net for nuthin'
Google faststone if you care to try it. Great when you're in a hurry and just need to add a bit of blur, wanna crop, or just want a raw thumbnail viewer. Windows only :+(

It was all shot on a SLIK tripod. I'm not steady enough to shoot all of that by hand unless I pump the ISO way up there. I use Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 for all of my stuff.

Yea, if I can figure out how to make a clean looking bezel. I haven't found a single person that has ever really made one.

Isn't most of the stuff you say complete sarcasm? I love the radio bezel as well, one of my favorite things on the interior.

Re: The Mistress - An Ongoing 8 Year Project

I can get the 7000 up to iso 1600 with pretty good results for 8x10 or smaller so long as I don't have the color saturation boosted. I quiver, so even that doesn't work at the light you shot those awesome pix in. So the manfroto tripod and ballhead or monopod with articulating mount usually getting used. I like their quick releases over the arca swiss style.

I'm going with a kirk ball head at some point to hold my 700 and it's lenses steady. I have older solid metal lenses for that one. I almost bought a D3 but opted for the 700 and spent the savings on lenses and gear.

My wife uses cs5 and paintshop pro. She does my editing. If I set the dials and settings right, no need for much editing for me as I shoot 99% in natural light. She's a wizz bang at getting fake light/real light white balance dilemas to work. Looks like you have that down too.

I shot all of this at ISO 100. I'd rather do that and be able to blow these things up to banner size if I ever wanted to. I thought about getting a Manfroto tripod, but used a friend's SLIK and was sold on it. Got the Pro700DX, its a pretty heavy duty piece and can get really low.

I've never used a monopod, and I don't think I ever would unless I end up getting a huge/low aperture telephoto lens. My 70-300 is comfortable enough where I don't get tired after using it all day free handed at racing events. Plus I like to move around too much.

I do all of my color/lighting adjustments in LR and if I have to clone any objects out of the photo I'll throw it in CS6 for those finishing touches.

Re: The Mistress - An Ongoing 8 Year Project

Monopod helps with the zoom shots at a distance. Say you're zooming at 300mm on a lug nut from 50 yards and your shutter speed has to be 125th or slower. More keepers when shooting distance shots, and they double as a walking stick on the trail. I do mostly nature shots and photo jounalism where the picture tells a story.
Slik makes good stuff. I bought my manfroto before the others started their macro capable legs and stems. Otherwise I'd probably have a slik. They, like the 7000 are a great value.

Re: The Mistress - An Ongoing 8 Year Project

I shoot a lot of drift events at 1/80 and never had a problem getting super detailed crisp shots just free handing. This was at 1/125 and zoom was over 200mm. I understand what you're saying though.

Re: The Mistress - An Ongoing 8 Year Project

Your panning skills show to the max.

I used a monopod in the pic below. Shot from about 40' with a D80 70-300 @ about 300, in mid day, converted the highly blown out details to gray scale, slightly cropped all with fast stone. It's been reduced to 640 here but in bmp is poster size.

That's why I use a mono pod

Oh yea, I can def see the use of a monopod for something like that. The detail in that flower is pretty amazing.

Re: The Mistress - An Ongoing 8 Year Project

Hey guys, got an update on the cluster. Got everything wired up and calibrated the speed sensor in it last night. Things left to do are: reset SRS, trick CEL into turning off, and make bezel. I love the look of the digital style. I apologize for the sh!tty cell pic. I'll be sure to get some good photos soon.

Cool.. after 8 years you must be feeling the warmth from the light at the end of the tunnel?

I hear there is no end of the tunnel. True? Some have said as long as there's money in your pocket, there's still mods to do.. also true?

How you gonna trick that CEL?

There's a light??

Its never ending, I intend to keep this car forever and keep improving it. Drive it til it blows up, build motor, repeat.

Not sure yet, from what I've read thus far the MIL indicator on the S2K side runs directly into the MIL indicator on the Prelude side and there are no other wires sharing. I just gotta look in my Helms Manual to make sure that wire on the Prelude does not supply power for anything else that could cause problems by just disconnecting it from the gauge. Resetting the SRS will take all of 30 seconds once I find the plug. And I am starting to figure out the problem with my fuel gauge. The resistance that the S2K cluster is looking for for Empty, Low, Half, and Full levels can be corrected on the Prelude side by wiring an inline resistor that comes from the fuel sending unit. I just have to figure out the resistance that my level sender is supposed to read at those fuel level points and calculate what resistor needs to be added and it should correct the fuel gauge for the most part. I doubt I will be able to get it perfect, but it should be a lot better than what it is now.
