So i tested my new camera today Canon EOS 450 D, and tbh im not that impressed (even though my camera skills are rubbish). Comparing to my old digital pocket camera i thought it would be better quality :x

Re: Tested my new camera in the sunset!

yeah, dark pictures ..
you notice how when you moved to the side to take your picture (last photo above) the whole image became lighter ? .. well, pay attention to this effect .. when you have an intense light source pointing at the cameras lens direction (headlights), the camera automatically captures that light and makes it darker so that the image would not be blinding to the viewer .. well in doing that the whole photo also becomes darker, nearly all your photos above you are in fonrt of the light beam from the headlights .. just try not to take photos when a light source is directly pointed to the cameras lens ..

play with ISO settings, shutter speeds, and flash and you'll do fine ..

Re: Tested my new camera in the sunset!

Street_ride gave some good advice but since your using an SLR you could just meter in a different place and use that reading to get your exposure how you want it. It will make it not so dark :)

Yes with that slr you can adjust your iso, exposure, aperture, and white balance to fix that. ;)

Re: Tested my new camera in the sunset!

First thing I would do is to drop the ISO to a lower level 800 is too high if you are shooting from a tripod, and since there is little to no blur on these photos with a 1/6 exposure I am sure you used one. When you lower the ISO you are making the sensor less sensitive thus it will require a longer exposure, not a problem with a still object and a tripod. The lower the sensitivity the less grain the image will have, that is why the image "quality" is lacking.

Looking at the files it says you were in pattern metering mode, which would have been fine if the headlights were off. Pattern mode adjust the exposure for the whole image, having the headlamps on throws this way out of balance, thus why your picture was too dark and underexposed. The correct mode to be in while shotting with the headlamps on is spot, this adjust the exposure by looking at just the very center of the image. Which in this case would have led to better exposer.

Now to make this shot perfect I would have used a HDR (high dynamic range) compile, due to the amount of contrast between the sky and the shadows. A HDR compile, overlays multiple images all with different exposer length, this will result in much more contrast then the camera can shot in. I would have used about 5 shots with 2 below and 2 above and 1 "correct" exposures.

I like the angles and location, keep on trying. It takes some time to get a good shot sometimes.

Re: Tested my new camera in the sunset!

The shots came out well for a first time with a DSLR. As stated above, there is much to learn and try. Looking forward to your next attempt.

Re: Tested my new camera in the sunset!

Everyone is giving good advice here. Wish I would have learned this much from my first attempts!

Dwend said it..lower down that ISO..it should only be a last resort when cranking that up. I like to keep it on 100 unless I have to change it (indoor photography its a must if you don't have a higher end, fast lens). But when your taking pictures of your car the great thing is it doesn't move so you could do a 10 second shutter speed if you want. Just make sure you use that tripod!

Read up on your manual and get familiar with the "m" mode on your camera. This gives you complete control over ISO, Shutter speed, and Aperture value. One cool thing to try is stop down to about F/11 or so and then compensate with the shutter speed and watch what the lights do. Twinkle twinkle little star! haha. Hope this isn't overwhelming...I get excited about pictures. Good luck!

Now I am by far no pro..I have plenty of my own things to learn. This picture has some issues of its own..but at least this will give ya a preview of the fun to have with manual mode. Also..I'm going against my own advice since in this picture I used an ISO of 800..but I was in a hurry so it sped up the process :]. One thing I always have a problem with is white balance. The camera settings never seem to be just right. Hopefully I'll pick up a grey card soon. You'll be learning about that as well.

ISO 800 - F/8 - 8sec. shutter
