Painted Valve Cover

Yeah, I finally got around to it. It's not the best paint job in the world, and needs to be touched up yet. I painted it in one day, the day before I had to leave for Ohio. Never a good idea to rush paint work. I also hadn't slept in 2 days prior and was hungover from a night of jagerbombs.

Its been debated as to what paint to use. Most ppl will say to use VHT bc of the heat yet they're are others who say good prep work along w/VHT primer will work too. VHT is limited in how many colors u can get. Search the web u can find some more colors of VHT. I think its personal preference tbch.

Re: Painted Valve Cover

I used a can of engine enamel (500 degree) that I picked up from Advanced Auto. Actually two cans, blue and silver. The blue is actually Ford Blue.

As for prep work I followed OneRedLude's (spelling?) instructions in the DIY section. I taped off every hole, then sprayed it with paint remover. However the paint remover was not aircraft remover, but I didn't even have any paint on my VC anyway. So ya. I then cleaned that crap off using a garden hose, being careful to try not to get any water inside. Then I had to use q-tips to get the paint remover gunk out of the gasket sealing surface, overall it was a major pain in the ass and prolly didn't need to be done in the first place.

I didn't sand at all, there wasn't a lot of time, so I took all the tape off, cleaned it up, dryed it off and taped everything up again. Then I painted my base coat, the whole thing, silver. Once that dried (sortof) in about 6 hours I then taped off the lettering and applied my coat of blue. I used several coats for each color. I let it then sit overnight, then peeled off the tape and threw it on the car next day.

It was a rush job, so it didn't turn out the way I wanted, and doesn't pass scutiny close up. It didn't sit long enough and I didn't tape the lettering up correctly. It needs to be touched up in places where the tape peeled off the paint on the lettering, and eventually needs to be repainted.

I would suggest following a DIY writeup when you do this, do al the prep work properly and give everything the proper amount of time to dry.

***On a related note, when working on ANYTHING electrical, always disconnect the negative battery cable. If you notice on my header I now have an inch long arc scar. Thats because when I was reattaching the grounding strap (the long black thing on the valve cover btw) the alternator connectors arced to the header. Popped my 100a battery fuse. Lots of sparks and such.
