Refurb'ed my stock rims finally

I didn't wanna take a dremel to it because I can't take the tires off, so I did what I could with some sandpaper, aircraft remover, paint and clear. I also used some polish called Never Dull once I stripped all the old clear coat off.

...Scroll to after the pics for a more detailed description if you want.

Here's what they looked like before;

After the stripping and a little rinse;

Old next to new;

Redoing the holes. I probably spent an hour and a half on each wheel getting the holes perfectly covered with tape. My back hurt so bad haha

With the holes painted but before the polish and clear coat;

And finally with the clear;

Here's a good before/after;

I know it's not that big of a deal compared to what a lot of you guys can do with your rides, but I'm pretty proud of myself for now
Plus, that aircraft stripper was AWESOME haha I coulda played with that stuff all day (With a mask of course, considering it's a carcinogen).

The more DETAILED description. Thanks polox33x :)

I started by having Discount Tire remove the weights from the outside of the rim, so there wouldn't be old clear coat under them. Once off the vehicle, I basically stripped the hell out of them with the strongest paint thinner I could find. Aircraft Remover is what I've always borrowed from my neighbor, but I ran out of that so I just went to Home Depot and asked for the strongest stuff they had lol.

I dunno if you've ever used a thinner like that, but you gotta get some latex gloves and some cheap goggles, and apply it to the rims with a cheap paint brush. I have a tendency to sling the thinner around with the brush, so that's why I say wear gloves and goggles. It stings a little if you get it on your skin, and it melted a little mark into my 'unscratchable' eyeglass lense lol.

Anyway, you 'paint' the thinner on in thin layers, and as it evaporates, it crinkles the paint on the rim. I don't have a picture of it on my rim, but I do on my ATV frame;

See how it crinkles up? From here, you can either use a stiff bristled (but still soft) brush of some sort to brush off what has come up, or you can do what I did - roll the wheel to the street and rinse it off. Once you rinse it a little, you can just use your hands to wipe away pieces of the coat (I still had the water running over the rim cuz I didn't want any thinner to get on me).

I ended up having to do this a couple times for each rim, cuz there were little stubborn pieces of clear coat that just wouldn't let go. So I put the thinner on two rims at a time just to try to be more efficient. In the holes of the rim where I painted black, It seemed like softer metal or something in there and whatever came off of there was kinda goopy. Freaked me out a little cuz I thought I might have used too much thinner or something, but it ended up being alright. So maybe if you end up using the thinner, just don't overdo the holes if you can help it.

Once it was all stripped, that's when I used sandpaper and polish. The worst part of my rims was the lip from curb rash, so I started with the heaviest grit sandpaper there and worked down to a finer grit. On the face of the rim, I actually started with the finest grit I could, and worked down to a grittier paper if the imperfection called for it, and then worked back finer from there. The last thing I used was a polishing compound called Never Dull that came in a can, and was basically like a bunch of cotton you just tear pieces off of and use some moderate fingertip pressure, just like waxing the car kinda.

After that, I masked off the whole rim with newspaper and masking tape. With just masking tape over the holes, I used the the plastic handle of my screwdriver against the corner of the holes so that the hole would tear out easier. Does that make sense? It created kind of a periforated edge that way. I cut out all the holes and painted them, removed the tape once dry, cleaned up the rims, and cleared them to keep them protected. Clear coat took the shine factor down a tiny bit, but they just scratched so easy without that protection and I didn't like that.

I'm trying to figure out what to do with the center caps. They look kinda dull in comparison to the rest of the wheel. Any ideas?

You did a very nice job! Keep in mind you can't always compare what you can do to your car with what others can. If you do, you'll never be happy with what you have accomplished and that's not what being a car enthusiast is about. Keep up the good work.

Thanks man I appreciate that. I get satisfaction from doing all this myself, I just don't wanna come across as a doosh that thinks his ride is better than anyone's regardless of how hard we've worked.
